Look no further, as our lovely Point Loma Native Plant Garden and River Mouth at the river estuary are always blooming with projects! Join the San Diego River Park Foundation's Garden Club twice a month to bring community members together to learn about native plants, gardening, and taking care of a native plant landscape. The Point Loma Native Plant Garden is a hidden gem that features many rare and endangered native plant species that are found along the San Diego River. Some of the plants in the collection are not found naturally anywhere else in the world but in our region.

Located just uphill from the San Diego River estuary, the garden is part of the City of San Diego's Collier Park West between Ocean Beach and Point Loma. This garden also features a native plant nursery where we nurture seedlings grown from seed and cuttings harvested on-site. Come visit the garden and nursery for inspiration for your own native plant installation in your yard, patio, or porch!

These events will be guided by SDRPF staff or volunteers and all tools will be provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get a little dirty. Sun protection and a reusable water bottle are a good idea, too! You're welcome to bring your own gloves, but it is not required. Earth Day Care for the Butterflies at Olivia Canyon

San Diego Canyonlands

Date/Time: Saturday, April 20, 8–10:30 a.m.

Location: San Diego. The full address will be provided after registration.

Ages: Families with children five years old and older are welcome to participate. Children younger than 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Time Commitment: Two and a half hours.

Olivia Canyon is a beautiful urban canyon in the City Heights neighborhood, boasting native wildflowers, an incredible habitat for wildlife, and a monarch waystation. Monarch waystations are places that provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. Without access to milkweeds throughout their spring and summer breeding areas in North America, monarchs would not be able to produce the successive generations that culminate in the migration each fall.

Volunteers will be removing invasive species from encroaching upon valuable habitat for monarch butterflies, as well as providing space for plants to expand on their own.

Wear sturdy shoes or boots (closed-toe shoes are required), comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty (long pants), and a hat for sun protection. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Tools and gloves are provided. We ask that volunteers are comfortable with hiking short distances, bending, and physically removing weeds with hands and tools. Please note that there are no bathrooms on-site.

Contact: Email San Diego Canyonlands at volunteer@sdcanyonlands.org with any questions before the event. Register online here. Volunteers under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign a youth waiver to participate in the event.
22nd Annual Creek to Bay Clean-up

I Love a Clean San Diego

Date/Time: Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m.–noon.

Location: Various locations around San Diego County.

Ages: All ages can participate. Volunteers younger than 18 years old will need a signed waiver.

Time Commitment: Three hours.

By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish by weight in the world’s oceans if we don’t defend our waterways from litter. Join I Love A Clean San Diego to be a part of the largest Earth Week cleanup in all of San Diego County. Volunteers are invited to grab buckets and work gloves and make a difference. This year, our countywide Creek to Bay event will have around 100 locations for volunteers to choose from, inland and coastal. Each location is hosted by a site captain (a specially trained volunteer) and they will be in charge of managing the volunteers on-site, properly disposing of the trash, and reporting back totals.

I Love a Clean San Diego has multiple cleanups taking place during April. Click here to find other cleanups.

Contact: Lance Mann at lmann@cleansd.org. Registration opens on April 1. Register for the cleanup online. The cleanup event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers, and anyone under 18 years old needs a waiver signed by a guardian. Please download and print the waiver, sign it, and bring it with you to the cleanup. We will also have waivers at the check-in table for volunteers. If you are under 18 years old please have your guardian check in with us at the cleanup to sign off on your participation.
2024 Earth Day Climate Action Workday

California State Parks Foundation

Date/Time: Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Location: Silver Strand State Beach, Coronado. The full opportunity address and directions will be sent to you by email after you sign up.

Ages: Volunteers must be 12 years old or older. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver signed by their guardian.

Time Commitment: Four hours.

Help restore coastal strand and dune habitats by removing iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis). Volunteers will use hand picks and loppers to pull the iceplant and take it to nearby dumpsters using burlap tarps. This species was introduced to stabilize soil along railroad tracks and has since spread and dominated coastal soils. Removing this invasive weed will improve habitat quality for sensitive flora and fauna populations, providing enhanced resilience to climate threats like sea level rise. It will also benefit threatened species of birds like the horned lark and killdeer plover, as well as rare dune plants like Brand’s phacelia and Nuttall’s lotus thrive on the bayside. Lunch will be provided. There will be picnic tables available to eat lunch, but if you'd like, you can bring your own chairs or blankets to have a picnic and relax after the event.

Contact: volunteer@calparks.org, 415.262.4400. Registration is available online. Please add your name to the waiting list if the project is full.

Donna Hester

Honor Flight San Diego is a non-profit team of volunteers dedicated to escorting San Diego County Veterans to Washington D.C. to visit and reflect at the Memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. Your family can help Honor Flight San Diego by writing thank you cards and letters to our military veterans to be distributed at a surprise "mail call" on their honor flight to Washington D.C. this April. Honor Flight expects 90 veterans to participate in the upcoming trip.

Honor Flight San Diego volunteers coordinate a surprise “mail call” during the Honor Flight to D.C., an unexpected distribution of cards and letters secretly collected from friends, family, and you! Letters and cards written by youth mean so much to our Veterans who see firsthand that our younger generation knows and appreciates their stories and sacrifices.

Please include your name along with a return address of your classroom, scout troop, or personal address on the back of the letter as many of our Veterans wish to write back to thank you. Please address cards to Dear Veteran.

Contact: Email or call Donna Hester with questions at donna@thehesters.com or 619. 985.9729. Honor Flight collects letters all year long.
Welcome Home Kits

This program empowers volunteers to collect new household items to benefit PATH clients so that those moving off the streets and into permanent homes have the basics to get started. By putting together Welcome Home Kits that include much-needed household items, you can help recently housed individuals and families feel welcomed and at home in their new living space. This volunteer project is great for families, faith groups, companies, philanthropic committees, schools, and individuals who want to rally friends for a good cause!
