Dear Friend of TCHP,
The Children’s Hunger Project thanks all our amazing supporters.

Without your generous support, we could not have provided essential weekend nutrition to over 2,500 Brevard County students each week last school year.
Imagine being a child who experiences weekend hunger.

"It’s Friday at lunchtime at school and I sit with my friends in the cafeteria. I know that this could be the last meal I might eat until I come back to school on Monday."

"When my stomach is growling, I can’t pay attention at school. I get sleepy, I don’t feel good, and I think about food all the time."

"It’s really nice when my teacher gives me food for the weekend because then I don’t have to worry anymore."

"If you don't get food, you are not surviving."

More than 50% of Brevard County students are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program at school. This statistic is an important key indicator of hunger and poverty in a geographic area.

While Brevard schools and their incredible staff members do an amazing job providing breakfast and lunch for students during the week, thousands of local children are not able to get enough food on the weekend. Our mission is to bridge the gap between lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Teachers distribute our food packets to children they know are most at risk for weekend hunger. (Often, those children share their meals with siblings who are also at risk of malnutrition, who are younger or older.)
When children come to school hungry they are at increased risk for:

  • Chronic health conditions.
  • Behavioral problems.
  • Depression, anxiety, withdrawal and poor self-esteem.

Research also shows that children at risk of hunger typically test 17% lower in math skills and take longer to recover from health problems.
A teacher in Brevard Public schools shared that during a high school fundraiser for TCHP, many of her students recognized that they had benefited from TCHP weekend food packs while in elementary school. They talked openly about how much TCHP meant to them and were so excited to give back to this organization. It was amazing to hear how it came full circle for these students, and it touched our hearts to hear the positive impact TCHP made in their lives.

Can you help us provide weekend nutrition to Brevard County elementary students? Helping overcome childhood hunger in our communities produces strong citizens tomorrow. All the donations we receive directly benefit children in your community. To date, we serve over 2,800 students each week and teachers inform us the need is steadily increasing.
