Here is our list of fantastic books (broken into age categories) to inspire their wanderlust AND the trips you should think about taking to make those pages come to life.

Preschool (Ages 3-5)

1.   "Madeline" by Ludwig Bemelmans

Where to visit: Paris, France

Follow the fearless little girl, Madeline, as she embarks on charming adventures around the beautiful city of Paris. This classic tale is filled with delightful illustrations of famous Parisian landmarks, making it a perfect introduction to French culture.


2.   "Paddington Bear" by Michael Bond

Where to visit:  London, England

Journey with Paddington Bear from darkest Peru to the bustling city of London. Through Paddington's eyes, children can explore iconic locations like Paddington Station and Buckingham Palace.

Early Elementary (Ages 6-9)

1.   "Eloise" by Kay Thompson

Where to visit: New York City, USA

Tween (Ages 10-12)

1.   "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" series by Rick Riordan

Where to visit: Greece or various US locations

In this series, Percy Jackson discovers his identity as a demigod. He travels across the United States encountering mythical creatures and gods in his quests, bringing Greek mythology to life in contemporary settings. Consider a cross-country trip to follow Percy's path or visit Greece to find the home of the original gods of Olympus


2.   "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling

Where to visit: Great Britain

You didn't think we would talk about reading to inspire travel without mentioning young Harry! In these beloved books, Harry and his friends journey through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, adolescence, and perilous battles. This series not only offers magical escapades but also showcases various British locales, inspiring visits to iconic sites like the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London.

Teen (Ages 13+)

1.   "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien

Where to visit: New Zealand

This classic novel follows Bilbo Baggins from the Shire to Middle-earth. When Peter Jackson found the landscapes of New Zealand to film The Hobbit, it was almost as if he conjured the scenes directly from the pages of the book.Visit Hobbiton on your own to see The Shire, brought to life.


2.   "The Call of the Wild” by Jack London
