65e8e6cd5ee84 image

CAMBRIDGE — Following a presentation by the Dorchester County Charter Review Committee on recommended changes to the county charter, the Dorchester County Council wants to hear from the public.

At a County Council meeting March 5, the council agreed to hold an open comment period at its upcoming March 19 meeting so that residents can comment on these recommended changes.

The County Council aims to gather thoughts and opinions from residents before deciding which, if any, of these recommendations to include as referendums on the November ballot. This would give Dorchester County residents the ability to decide if any changes should be made to the County Charter.

Maryland Debates Sales Tax:: Lower Rates, Broader Reach

65f0d854a6e74 image

SALISBURY, MD. - A proposed bill in Maryland's capital is stirring debate as it aims to lower the state's sales tax from 6 percent to 5 percent while broadening its scope to tax services.

Initially, the prospect of a lower sales tax rate may seem appealing to consumers, with the potential for more money to stay in their pockets. However, the other aspect of the bill, which seeks to expand the sales tax to encompass a wider array of goods and services, has brought controversy.

Under the proposed legislation, everyday services such as haircuts, pet grooming, dry cleaning, and childcare, currently exempt from sales tax, would now be subject to it.

6th Annual JA Inspire Returns, Connects Maryland Students with Various Career Paths

SALISBURY, Md. – “I don’t really know yet. I just want to try different things,” Ayres said.

Taylor Ayres is a Snow Hill Middle School student and one of nearly 4,200 others from nine counties across Maryland apart of JA Inspire 2024. “We pair them with an in-class curriculum and then bring them to the civic center to learn all sorts of hands-on learning activities,” Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore Sr. Development Manager Erin Williamson said.

“We have 15 different career clusters that are represented from agriculture all the way down to hospitality and tourism. ”

The students a part of the program are all eighth graders, Erin Williamson said it’s the perfect time to get them thinking about the future. “When they go into 9th grade, they start picking their career paths. If they want to take specific courses that align with a certain direction after school, now is the time to get infant of them,” she said.

Small Business Grants - Business Boost

DHCD-Logo image

Through $10 million in small business and community development grants, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development plans to target investments to activate vacant spaces in business corridors and support small businesses with start up or expansion funds while creating jobs and increasing local economic activity. There are two paths that the grant funding can be accessed: economic development entities can apply for Project Restore 2.0, which will incentivize commercial investment in downtowns, Main Streets and other business districts by providing funding for entities to subgrant to businesses. Or eligible new and expanding small businesses in designated Sustainable Communities can apply for funding directly through Business Boost.

New Look for Public Transit in the Mid-Shore

2024DelmarvaCommTransitNewLook image

Delmarva Community Transit, (DCT) a division of Delmarva Community Services Inc.--has a new look on their buses. “We incorporated the Maryland flag design into our logo,” says Delmarva Community Services Deputy Director, Keith Adkins. “We think it really pops,” adds Adkins. “The wording and signage on our buses is easier to read, as well, according to the deputy director. A recent transportation development plan survey resulted in a significant percentage of the public thinking that DCT provides only transportation to seniors, for medical appointments, and individuals with disabilities. The new logo is to bring awareness to the public that DCT provides public transit also. DCT has eighteen bus routes that serve the Mid-Shore region with public transit along with a demand service, One Stop service and a Talbot County Mobility on Demand service. DCT would not be able to provide public transit if not for the support of Maryland Transit Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Talbot, Dorchester, Caroline, and Kent County governments. The transportation that DCT provides to our riders means quality of life to them. Without public transit citizens who use our service would not be able to go to work, medical appointments, shopping, dialysis treatments, interact with family and friends, etc. The new logo will be applied to all buses purchased to replace the current fleet. DCT’s 65 buses provide service throughout Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Wicomico, and Talbot Counties.
