THE SS UNITED STATES MAKES A PORT OF CALL IN CHINA

Award-winning author-illustrator David Macaulay's "Crossing on Time: Steam Engines, Fast Ships, and a Journey to the New World" is now available in China. The book was already available in Germany, Korea, and, of course, the United States, and this latest international publication is another example of the wide reaching influence of our beloved flagship.

Originally published in 2019, "Crossing on Time" is framed around Macaulay's own childhood experience steaming across the Atlantic on the SS United States. "Crossing on Time" is a tour de force of the art of explanation and a touching and surprising childhood story.

GWEN LUX MEDALLION ACQUIRED BY HAMPTON ROADS CHAPTER; TO BE DONATED TO THE CONSERVANCY

The SS United States Conservancy's Hampton Roads Chapter recently acquired this magnificent piece of shipboard art which will be donated to the Conservancy. The 6" medallion is a simplified version of the South Carolina state seal and was once located on the wall of the First Class Dining Room.

Accomplished artist Gwen Lux crafted this, and many other medallions depicting state symbols and flowers, out of foam glass. She pioneered the use of this uniquely light and fireproof material. Her other shipboard art included the four figure sculpture "Expressions of Freedom," the centerpiece of the First Class Dining Room.
