PCPI is giving away money to preschools and the deadline to apply is December 15, 2021!

We are very excited to be offering these grants for 2022: the Cooperative Spirit Grant and the Emergency Grant programs.

The Cooperative Spirit Grant has been extremely popular the last few years. It is for schools who have an idea for increasing parent involvement by designing a project that will make their school a better place and leave a legacy for future classes, as it also provides an opportunity for bonding and a sense of community among the school’s members. We realize things will look different this year as we continue to deal with Covid safety. The guidelines are open – be creative!

The Emergency Grant is for schools having financial difficulties, especially due to the pandemic.

U.S. and Canadian preschools with direct membership in PCPI are eligible for both grants. Member councils may apply for a grant to fund a council cooperative project.

The total grant amount for the Cooperative Spirit Grants is up to $1,500 to fund two or three programs. Each school may request from $100 to $1,000. The total amount for the Emergency Grants is $1,700 for two or three programs and schools may request from $400 to $850.
Grant requests are due by December 15, 2021 at (put in email address here.) The grant award decisions will be made by January 15, 2022.
More Than Just a Meeting

April in Portland, Oregon should be beautiful – though we can’t guarantee it won’t rain.

But we can assure you that there will be camaraderie among the attendees at the PCPI Annual Meetings – all of whom are committed to high quality cooperative preschools.

Many conversations are held both during the meetings and social times to share our schools’ successes and challenges. Several school visits are being planned and are always an important way to learn. An awards banquet will be held during the meetings.

Welcome Back, PCPC!
by Meg Kennedy Shaw
PCPI extends a warm welcome to Parent Co-Operative Preschool Corporation (PCPC), a Canadian council serving 28 centers in the greater Toronto and wider Ontario area. PCPC was a member of PCPI for many years through 2005 as one of the area councils of the Organization for Parent Participation in Childcare and Education, Ontario (OPPCEO), so we are particularly pleased to have this council return to the PCPI family.

PCPC has member centers in the southern, central, eastern and mid-northern areas of Ontario. The Council believes in a strong commitment to supporting and strengthening the partnership between parents and educators in order to create and maintain excellent learning environments for children.

Executive Director since 2019, Adele Rosanova sees her main role as acting as liaison between her board of directors and the staff at the member centers. What has she learned in this time? Chiefly that “co-op preschools are unique and need representation and support in the childcare sector. Many of these co-op preschools were founded fifty years ago and should be recognized and appreciated for what they offer to their communities.”

The many benefits of membership in PCPI include possibilities for networking — online groups for discussion and comparison, and sharing of ideas. Additionally, member councils and preschools have access to various grants.

Perhaps the most appealing benefit to Canadian cooperative preschools is the opportunity to apply for the Katharine Whiteside Taylor Grant. This grant offers annual funds to help support a parent education project or other activity. Katharine Whiteside Taylor devoted much of her life to the parent cooperative movement and was a founding member of PCPI. The deadline for applying is December 15, 2021.
