Writing Programs

The Jaffrey Civic Center is thrilled to be expanding its programs and workshop offerings to include opportunities in the literary arts. The center has teamed up with local author Brian Evans Jones on two new initiatives. The first is a writer’s group. Titled, The Contoocook Writers Circle, the goal of this group is to inspire and nurture writers of all genres.

Writers are encouraged to bring their writing, share it with the group, and receive helpful, supportive feedback on how they can develop it. All levels are welcome, from beginner to published. In addition to the feedback on writing, this is an opportunity for writers to meet other writers, help them out, and get ideas! The group is set to meet at Jaffrey Civic Center on the first Tuesday of every month, 6-8pm. The cost is $10, and you can pre-book or pay on the night.

The second program is Figures of Speech: A Poetry Workshop, in conjunction with the Go Figure exhibition. The workshop will take place at the center on October 18, from 6-8:30. In this workshop participants will write poetry that also explores the human form, as seen through the artists represented in the Go Figure exhibition, currently on display at the center. Writing about art is a wonderful way of making poems, and the workshop will explore multiple diverse ways of looking at art and using it as a starting point for poetry. The class will explore the exhibition for inspiration, write one or two poems about artworks, and get helpful feedback on their writing.

The workshop and writers’ groups are led by former Poet Laureate of Hampshire, UK, Brian Evans-Jones, who has taught workshops in America and Britain since 2005. All levels are welcome, including those who have never tried poetry before: Brian has helped many people take their first steps into poetry, as well as teaching experienced poets.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit cultural facility founded in 1966. The mission of the Jaffrey Civic Center is to provide and sustain a public venue where citizens, residents, and visitors of the Monadnock region can pursue artistic, educational, and civic activities. The Center’s goal is to contribute to the cultural enrichment and enlightenment of the community. There is no admission fee to the Civic Center and all art shows and receptions are FREE and open to the public. Call for Artists
Montague, MA
The Montague Reporter, a weekly community newspaper serving Montague, Gill Wendell, Leverett and Erving, invites local artists to submit designs for a special Wrapping Paper Edition. This special issue of the paper will be printed and sold to be used exclusively as recyclable and unique wrapping paper. The project is also a fundraiser for this independent, non-profit newspaper.

The paper will select seven artists from the Western Mass region to design wrapping paper pages this summer, based on their proposals and samples submitted by September 1. Each artist will be given the space of two full adjacent pages for their design, making a double page measuring approximately 20 by 22 inches. You may design in full color, black and white, or fifty shades of (G-rated) gray. Tattoo artists, comic illustrators, graffiti specialists, painters, street sketchers, kids, photographers, geometry nerds, type designers – all are encouraged to send in ideas for a wrapping paper!

The Wrapping Paper Edition will be printed during Thanksgiving week and sold throughout November and December, online and in stores. Each artist will receive a stipend of $200, thanks to cultural council funding from the towns of Montague, Wendell, and Gill, and the generosity of an anonymous donor. Artists will each receive ten copies of the Wrapping Paper Edition.

Send your contact information and a proposal for a unique wrapping paper design, along with up to three samples of finished work that represents your style (.jpegs please), to features@montaguereporter.org with “Wrap” in the subject line. Proposals are due by September 1, and selected artists will be contacted on Monday, September 12. Finished designs would be due at the end of October.

For more information about the project, contact features editor Nina Rossi at (413) 834-8800 or nalerossi@gmail.com.
