Colorado State University Pueblo Announces Dana Perino as 2023 Commencement Speaker

Colorado State University Pueblo welcomes distinguished alumnus Dana Perino to deliver the spring 2023 commencement address. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the ThunderBowl on Saturday, May 13.

“We are excited to welcome Dana back to CSU Pueblo. Her career has served as an inspiration for our students and she has been an incredible mentor providing opportunities for them to see her studio in New York,” CSU Pueblo President Timothy Mottet said.

This will be the second time Perino will address the university’s graduating class. Perino was the commencement speaker for the 2008 commencement exercises and spoke about her journey to the White House and beyond.

“My experience at CSU Pueblo helped shape me into who I am today, both professionally and personally. I am looking forward to speaking with the class of 2023 to remind them that with integrity, dignity and discipline, anyone can reach their goals and everything will be okay,” Perino said.

APPLICATION DUE DATE-WEDNESDAY: NSF Funding Opportunity: Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program)

On behalf of Research Development

The NSF HSI program aims to enhance the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students pursuing associates or baccalaureate degrees in STEM. Projects must include strategies that support building capacity at the University through innovative approaches: to incentivize institutional and community transformation; to promote fundamental research (i) on engaged student learning, (ii) about what it takes to diversify and increase participation in STEM effectively, and (iii) that improves our understanding of how to build institutional capacity at HSIs. The outcomes of the HSI Program include broadening the participation of historically underrepresented students in STEM and expanding students' pathways to continued STEM education and integration into the STEM workforce. The program accepts proposals in three tracks; however, faculty members at our University have been most successful with the Track 2 program. Track 2 or Implementation and Evaluation Projects (IEP) supports the implementation of the evidence-based unit-, department-, or multi-department-level activities that will enhance the quality of undergraduate STEM education. These projects may design and implement a new educational practice or practices and/or adapt/replicate evidence-based practices that are already known to be effective. In addition to the core research of the proposed project, all tracks may support faculty research that is inter-, multi-, or trans-disciplinary, discipline-specific research, STEM education research, discipline-based STEM education research, or broadening participation research. Research may be based at their home institution, an NSF-funded research center, another institution of higher education, and/or a national laboratory. 2023 Application deadlines: February 8, 2023, and August 30, 2023.

New: Information Security: Malicious Online Templates

On behalf of Information Technology - Information Security

Bad actors are now buying Google Ads to get users directed to their fake websites. Their latest scheme is directed at hiding malicious software (malware) in online business-related documents and templates. Some of this malware can remotely access your computer, your home network, and our CSU Pueblo network.

At some point, we've all probably searched Google for business documents or templates. Things like Compliance checklists, Contract agreements, Questionnaires, Surveys, HR forms, Business Financial Forms, etc. can save time and educate us. Bad actors are now offering these types of business templates on their fake websites with their malware installed in the template or .zip files. When we download their template or .zip file, we land up installing their malware onto our computers.

Please do your due diligence and confirm the website you’re visiting and downloading documents from is legitimate. Otherwise, we could be installing really bad malware like Remote Access Trojans and Key Loggers

IT Security: QR Codes: A Growing Vulnerability to Cyber Crimes

On behalf of Information Technology - Information Security

Consumer technologies continue to become increasingly innovative. While they often make our lives better, these new technologies give cyber criminals new ways to threaten our privacy and steal our identities. As QR codes continue to grow in popularity, cyber criminals have begun to use them to conduct their malicious attacks.

Smartphones make QR code scanning easy. By simply pointing the phone’s camera at the QR code, consumers can access promotions, see restaurant menus, access digital tickets, and more. However, not all QR codes are legitimate.

The FBI has issued warnings about cyber criminals tampering with QR codes to steal users’ login and financial information. After scanning a QR code, victims can be directed to a website disguised as legitimate but that gathers identity information and inserts digital infections.

In this lecture Dr. Briscoe discusses how using technologies to replace environmentally harmful things is good, right? Electric cars, e-readers, plant-based meat substitutes - these supposed environmental positives may have a paradoxical effect on resource consumption…
