Reclaiming "doom rooms"
During consult calls, clients sometimes joke about having a "doom room" or a "basement of shame" that has become a dumping ground for clutter and so is unusable.
For me, these jobs are fun challenges. By the end of our session, the client regains an entire room to enjoy and use. It feels like a real estate magic trick! Here are two examples of reclaimed rooms:

Guest room 'before & after' in one 3.5-hour session
|
|
This client wanted to reclaim her guest bedroom so that it felt spacious and feminine.
First, the client and I went through each item in the space and she decluttered extraneous items including furniture. We carried big items and furniture outside to her sidewalk, photographed them, and listed them online for free, and I took a carload of smaller donations for her.
Next, we used her closet space more effectively to store the things she did want on hand, including categories of art supplies. I cleaned, then arranged the room to show off her favorite pieces of furniture, art, and linens.
As a result, there's now plenty of space for her favorite items, she can comfortably host overnight guests, and she has a well-lit work table for her crafting projects.

Game room 'before & after' in one 4-hour session
|
|
This client wanted to reclaim her game room for hosting get-togethers.
First, we sorted through each item for her to decide what to sell, donate, gift, toss, recycle, or keep.
Next, the client texted family members to ask if they wanted specific items, which helped her decide on the spot what to set aside for family and what to donate. She listed a cedar chest on Offer Up and someone came and took it immediately. We loaded both my car and her truck with donations for Goodwill.
Finally, we restocked the drawers with supplies specific to how she uses the space -- board games, playing cards, coasters, napkins -- so that everything she needs is at hand.
As a result, there's now plenty of space for company!

FAQ: "Where does my stuff go?"
|
|
Part of my service is whisking away up to a carload per session of your donations and tricky-to-recycle items. Ever wonder where your stuff goes?
Here is my Top 10 list of excellent non-profits where I take your donations:
Humble Design - My absolute favorite non-profit. Using donated furniture and housewares, they furnish and beautifully decorate homes for families, Veterans, and individuals who are emerging from homelessness.
West Seattle Food Bank - Fantastic local organization where I take your unopened pantry items, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, packages of diapers, and pet supplies.
Interconnection - Visionary organization that refurbishes your donated laptops to give to low-income folks both nationally and internationally, "creating opportunity through access to technology."
Seattle Recreative - Where I take your high-quality art supplies. Proceeds from their resale shop "helps fund our arts programming and supply free creative materials and workshops to the community."
Seattle JazzEd - So much fun to donate musical instruments to this fantastic organization! They provide music education to kids in grades 4-12.
Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center - Where I take your old eyeglasses and reading glasses. Their mission is "to provide used eyeglasses free of charge to people in remote areas of developing countries, delivered at the hands of volunteer eye care professionals."
Meyer Medical Equipment Center - Where I take your gently-used walkers, knee scooters, crutches, and shower chairs that go to people who could not afford them otherwise.
WestSide Baby - Where I take your gently-used babies' and kids' clothing and supplies for families in need.
