 Online Parent Discussion Group
5:00-6:30 p.m.
Thursdays, April 29-June 10

Join this weekly opportunity to share ideas, strategies, and support in a relaxed setting, guided by trained facilitators. Through the valuable insights of the other parents and reading the book A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children, you will learn more about giftedness, discuss the challenges of parenting, and share strategies for supporting our gifted children while enhancing family relationships. These parent groups are not therapy sessions; however, participants often find the sessions to be therapeutic, empowering and comforting. Topics include:

  • Characteristics of gifted children
  • Communication
  • Motivation, underachievement & executive function
  • Establishing discipline/teaching self-management
  • Stress, perfectionism, idealism & depression
  • Acquaintances, friends, peers; only children & siblings
  • Values, traditions & complexities of parenting

The video conferencing tool, Zoom, will be used to facilitate dialogue, and connect with each other live each week. Login details are provided at the time of registration.

Facilitators

This 7-session online series is co-facilitated by Sylvia Bagley and Karen Thornton.

Sylvia Bagley, Ph.D., is director of the Instructional Leadership Masters         Specialization at the University of Washington in Seattle, and was formerly an   elementary school teacher and instructional math coach. She co-parents three   twice-exceptional (2E) kids between the ages of 8-12, is Chair of SENG’s Education   Committee, and was a former Board Member of the Northshore School District   HiCap Parents Council. She blogs about being a “rainforest-minded” parent of 2E   kids at http://halfofthetruth.org.

Karen Thornton is the current president of Northwest Gifted Child Association   and   has served on the board for three years. An experienced facilitor, she loves sharing   resources and ideas with other parents, particularly resources related to executive   functioning, intensities and deep emotions. Karen is the proud mom of two PG 2E     kids, a 6 year old son in 1st grade and a 10 year old daughter in 5th grade.
