2022 FAMILY NEWSLETTER
November 2021
Hello Class of 2023 Families!
Happy November! Many students will travel home for Thanksgiving Break (November 24-28) while some will stay on campus. Not to worry — all residence halls will remain open during this time.

This month’s Parent & Family Webinar Series speaker is Dr. Kelly Crace, Associate Vice President for Health & Wellness and Director of the Center for Mindfulness and Authentic Excellence. Our son, Nick, really liked both him and his talk at a recent e-sports development event. Tune in live on Tuesday, November 16th at 7PM EST to explore authentic flourishing at an individual and community level.

We hope this newsletter contains helpful content as you prepare to welcome your student home for upcoming breaks and as we look ahead to next semester!

Thank you for being part of the William & Mary community!

Sincerely,
Mary Hallahan Kushan ’85, P ’22 and Jeff Kushan ’85, P ’22

Family Webinar: Authentic Excellence 201
Presented by Dr. Kelly Crace, Associate VP for Health & Wellness. During Orientation, a concept was introduced that distinguished fear-based excellence from authentic excellence. This session will explore this concept at a deeper level and describe a model designed to promote authentic flourishing at an individual and community level. It will examine five paradigm shifts for resilience a relentless world. For those who didn't attend the introductory session at Orientation, a brief review will be provided at the beginning.

Join us on November 16th at 7PM EST.

No Title Needed
No Title Needed is a leadership initiative designed to help students understand that you don’t need to have a position or title to contribute to positive change. Throughout the month of November Student Leadership Development will recognize students who, without formal position or title, take positive action based on their values; work effectively with others; problem solve, and find creative solutions; and/or make contributions to their organization or the W&M community.

When talking with your student, focus on their involvements and contributions, rather than titles or positions. Here are some questions to get you started when asking them about their involvements on campus.
  • What have you chosen to get involved in at W&M? And why?
  • How do you contribute to your organization(s)?
  • What are your organizations working on that is exciting to you, and how are you contributing?
  • To you, what is the most important thing about your organization?
  • What are some things that you help do in the organization?
  • Who do you admire in your organization that contributes without a position or title?
Study in D.C. with the W&M Washington Center
Has your student wanted to spend live in a city during their collegiate years? Are they hoping to earn academic credit during winter or summer break? Does your student want to learn more about their professional interests and what life after W&M could look like? The Washington Center is the place for ALL students! At the Washington Center, we offer courses all year for students to explore different academic interests with professors from a variety of majors, get internship experience across dozens of industries, and explore D.C. while connecting with W&M alumni.

We are currently accepting student portfolios to participate in all our programs and scholarships are available so every student who wants to study in D.C. can. Learn more in the link below.
Transfer Student Celebration Week
Every October the university gathers to celebrate and support new and continuing transfer students as they navigate social and academic transitions. This year, workshops, information sessions, and social networking events were held throughout the week in partnership with the Cohen Career Center, Center for Student Diversity, Department of Arts & Sciences, Office of Student Veteran Engagement, and Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising.
Highland's Virtual Program: Francophiles, Friendships, and Femmes Artistes
Art history tells us so much about the past! Join the Highland community at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 16 as we will welcome Dr. Maura Gleeson, Visiting Professor of Humanities at Valencia College, for the virtual program, "Francophiles, Friendships, and Femmes Artistes." Using Highland's portrait collection, program participants will learn more about the Monroe family’s connection to Madame Campan, Eugène de Beauharnais and Hortense Bonaparte—friendships that began in 1790s France—as well as new scholarship on the artists behind the paintings.

The Parents Fund
The Parents Fund is critical in our efforts to support the health and well-being of our students. With your support, we are able to offer students a wide array of wellness resources -- from health promotion, prevention, and education to clinical intervention services.

One vital resource made possible by the Parents Fund is the after-hours counseling phone service, available 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. during weekdays and anytime during the weekend (757-221-3620).

One student stated: “I am really thankful for these services. As an RA, I needed support with a resident who had a mental health crisis; I needed to connect them with services. I am grateful for the support they offered this student.”

Another student indicated: “[ProtoCall] counselors were supportive. Someone from the Counseling Center checked in on me again within a day or two; they made me feel like I was cared for.”

This after-hours counseling service is not possible without philanthropic support. Please make a gift to the Parents Fund today. Your contribution has a direct impact on students’ lives.
