Silverdale Transit Center Breaks Ground |

As passengers load and unload at the new Silverdale Transit Center, their buses will be storing up energy for their next ride.
Work is set to begin soon on the new Kitsap Transit center near the Highway 303-Ridgetop Boulevard overpass. The center is expected to open in the fall of 2023. A crowd of officials, including Gov. Jay Inslee and Federal Transit Administration head Nuria Fernandez, tossed the first shovelfuls of dirt in the rain on Thursday.
“Not only is this a transit center that’s going to be key to our entire operation, but it’s going to be the first transit system in Western Washington that we’re aware of that’s going to have a wireless charging capability for our battery-electric buses,” Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson said at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We all know that the current technology with cell phones is that you just set your phone on the gizmo and it automatically charges. Well, we’re going to have a couple of those gizmos as a part of this project that the buses will just come over and stop and while they’re loading and offloading passengers, they’ll be able to be recharged. We’re pretty excited about that.”

Armed Forces Day Parade Brings Crowd
Back to Downtown Bremerton

Revving classic car engines, booming marching bands and plenty of men and women in uniform return Saturday to Bremerton for the first Armed Forces Day parade in three years.
The parade, sidelined like many community events during the COVID-19 pandemic, will roar back to life with 125 entries. Thousands are expected to converge downtown, on what is the 75th anniversary of the first Armed Forces Day parade.
"We're just really excited that it's happening after a two-year hiatus," said David Emmons, executive director of the Bremerton and Silverdale chambers of commerce, and host of the event. "This town just really loves the military and what it does for Bremerton. We're excited to continue this tradition."

Restaurant Relief Bill Fails in US Senate |

In what is likely the last and best chance to secure additional relief from the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) this year, a vote on the Small Business COVID Relief Act of 2022 (S. 4008) failed to get the necessary 60 votes in the U.S. Senate on Thursday (52-43) to move forward on further consideration. While a majority of senators voted to end debate, a sign of majority support for passage, there were not enough votes to overcome the filibuster, effectively killing the bill.
Anthony Anton, Washington Hospitality Association president & CEO, shared his disappointment with the vote in Washington, D.C., today.
“I’m devastated at today’s news that almost 4,000 restaurants in Washington state, which desperately need help through the Restaurant Revitalization Fund will not get it,” said Anton. “If not for the filibuster, I’m confident enough senators would have supported this critical lifeline for restaurants. We want to thank Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for their immense efforts to try to get the bill passed. We will continue fighting for the relief restaurants need to keep their doors open.”

- The Port Orchard Ferry will operate from 7:00 AM (departing Port Orchard) to 6:45 PM (departing Bremerton).
- Kitsap Fast Ferries will not operate. Routes 86, 202, 301 and 302 will not operate.
- BI Ride will operate from 9:15 AM to 6:00 PM.
- All other Ride services will not operate.

Filing Week Wrap: Races Set for
August Primary, November Election

Kitsap County Sheriff John Gese, one of three sitting county officials who face an opponent for election in November, said he brings the experience necessary to deal with the challenges facing law enforcement.
"I really know how this operation works," he said, adding, "I can't think of any better experience someone could have to prepare for sheriff."
With filing week wrapping up on Friday, Gese, Kitsap County Auditor Paul Andrews and Kitsap County Treasurer Meredith Green were the only county incumbents to draw challengers.
Central Kitsap County Commissioner Ed Wolfe is retiring. The race for his seat will bring a primary in August with five candidates. They include three Republicans — Port of Bremerton Commissioner Axel Strakeljahn, Coroner Jeff Wallis, and Newlife Church executive Josh Hinman — along with Democrats Katie Walters, executive director of the Leadership Kitsap Foundation, and Leiyomi Preciado Lagdameo, a certified peer counselor.

WSDOT Project Alert: Construction crews are working on the SR3 Chico Creek fish barrier removal project. Drivers traveling southbound who exit onto Chico Way NW near Bremerton will not be able to turn left toward Silverdale. All travelers will turn right towards Bremerton. Children 5-11 Now Eligible for Pfizer Booster |
|
Booster doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are now available for children ages 5-11. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) expanded booster dose eligibility to include everyone 5 and older following guidance and recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup.
“The CDC’s announcement is welcome news as we continue to do everything we can to keep Washingtonians of all ages safe,” said Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, Secretary of Health. “This pandemic is not over and we must continue to use the tools at our disposal. This includes masking, therapeutics, vaccinations and – of course – boosters. Keeping yourselves and those around you safe is of utmost importance, and this recommendation is another step in that direction.”
