THIS WEEK'S RECAP
National School Psychology Week
This week was National School Psychology Week (NSPW). As you know, school psychologists can empower students to grow in areas such as mental health and problem solving. They help our students thrive in school, at home, and in life. Our School Psychologists also play a major role in crisis prevention and response at East. A huge shoutout to our School Psychologists, Milia Overton and Ann Reyes, for all their hard work with our students and families this year. If you need to connect with a School Psychologist, you can email them or book an appointment at east.madison.k12.wi.us/staff-contact.
ProStart Chef 1 Students Make Connections Through Cooking
“Food builds big bridges. If you can eat with someone, you can learn from them, and when you learn from someone, you can make big changes. We changed the course of America in this restaurant over bowls of gumbo. We can talk to each other and relate to each other when we eat together.” - Chef Leah Chase

This week in Emily Sonneman's ProStart Chef 1 class, students made gumbo and learned about Chef Leah Chase, who owned and ran a restaurant in New Orleans, Dooky Chase's Restaurant. This was the restaurant where civil rights leaders met to strategize and plan ways to make positive changes for social justice in this country. It was a place where people of any race, color, creed, or background felt welcomed and were able to meet even when there was no public place to meet legally to discuss their ideas. Leah Chase promoted Black artists by purchasing and showcasing their art in the restaurant and hosted Black musicians to perform in the restaurant.

The week culminated with a Gumbo Get Together where guests like local government officials, school board members, district staff, and alumni joined students to eat gumbo while having conversations about what we can learn from one another and what changes can we work toward for positive change at East High School.
Painting Class Has Therapeutic Value For Students And Staff
Photos below show Flora and Maty, students in April Sopkin's third period art class, displaying some of their most recent work. Ms. Sopkin says she is grateful to be teaching art again in person. She and her colleagues went above and beyond to keep their students creating during virtual learning, holding art supply pick-ups and drop-offs, sending home drawing kits, sketch books, paints and brushes, styrofoam for printmaking, kits of tiles and wood for mosaics, pottery wheels for students in advanced ceramics, and love. Our students and educators are proof that nothing – not a global pandemic, not a hard week at school – can stop them from creating. It is in difficult times that we need art the most. It is calming, it is cathartic, healing, connecting, expressing, learning, loving, hoping.
