But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

-Romans 5:8

Every night, I say goodnight to my wife and two boys, and then sit on the edge of my bed. I thank the Lord for another day, put my phone on silent, and lay my head on my pillow. But my day is not quite done, I still have one final text to send. The text is always to the same two recipients - my daughters, both whom live out of state. The message? Two little images, emojis, each signaling a kiss. Since I cannot physically kiss them on the forehead, I send them a message so they know I am thinking of them and love them.

Parents demonstrate their love in a variety of ways- sure they give hugs and kisses. Parents also make endless meals and drive long carpools. Moms and dads work hard to pay bills and change thousands of stinky diapers. Parents go to games, dances, competitions, and performances all to show their love to their most precious possessions. But when one dad’s little girls are all grown up and move away, this dad sends tiny round yellow faces with turned lips and a heart so his girls know how much they are loved.

The Apostle Paul tells us that God displays his love most astonishingly, on the cross. Jesus suffered, oh how he suffered, taking all our sins upon himself. God’s children, sinners like us, don’t deserve and cannot earn this incredible love, no, quite the contrary. In our sins, we deserve nothing but death and eternal damnation. But while we are still sinners, Jesus Christ our Lord died for us anyway! Now that is real love!

Are you wondering this Wednesday if you are loved? Look up to the cross, and you will see your answer.

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
