Sydney’s Favorites Devotional: Week 2

“You have built a stronghold by the songs of children. Strength rises up with the chorus of infants. This kind of praise has power to shut Satan's mouth. Childlike worship will silence the madness of those who oppose you.”
~ Psalm 8:2 (tPt)

What is required to sing? Breath, vocal cords, melody.

As I contemplated this verse, I began to see it in a whole new light.

Breath ~ then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. (Genesis 2:7 ESV).

Vocal cords create sound as the breath strums over the folds, sending sound vibrations through the air. We breathe in the breath that God gives then exhale releasing the sound. Our breath itself praises Him. It declares He is the creator of heaven and earth and every created thing. He is the creator of you and me. With our first breath, the first expression of our praise to God was released into the atmosphere.

I have been blessed to be a mother. I have been blessed to be a grandmother. I was present at my first grandbaby’s birth just a few months ago. And the first thing I wanted to hear once my precious babies and grandbaby were born was a hearty cry. The cry that declares to everyone in the room that life has entered the world. We shout for joy, and tears of praise run down our cheeks as we meet the new life that will forever change us. It is a deep place in the heart that is touched by the balm of the infant’s first cry. What an amazing declaration of the power and mystery of God when new life enters the world. And isn’t that truly what God wants for each of us? New life. New breath. Redemption. Hope.

The power of the breath of God is the same power of the resurrection of Christ. They bring the miracle of new life into the world displaying His glory and triumph over the enemy.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
~ Psalm 150:6 ESV

Take a moment to consider the miracle of life and the power of His breath in us and thank God for the new life He gives.
