MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
|
|
Hi Everyone,
We are out of outbreak effective April 8 2021!!! We are so thankful for your support and kind words throughout this experience. We are thankful that there was no further positive cases which is a testament to the diligence and infection control practices that are in place at JMPC!!! If you didn’t see it yet, please check out this video here that was posted on the County Facebook page yesterday afternoon. We are fortunate to have a professional photographer on staff here as a Resident Support Aide, Becky Hinch. She took these pictures and created this video to document our outbreak experience.

We discovered some people were having difficulty receiving our newsletter into their inbox. As a result, we have changed the platform that we will be using for the newsletter. The only change that you are likely to notice is the email address is coming from a County domain now.
The Ministry of Long Term Care provided some direction to Long Term Care Homes late last week regarding enhancing access to residents by essential caregivers. This announcement allows homes to give consideration to these enhancements based on their own unique layout, resident safety, infection control precautions and supplies, staffing ability etc. This will be an incremental work in progress as we collaborate with public health and the ministry to ensure low risk, meaningful engagement opportunities. We do expect further information from the Ministry of Long Term Care on this topic next week so will keep you posted. However, with the Provincial Lockdown announcement that took effect yesterday, we are somewhat limited in how we can provide enhancements for the essential caregivers.
What enhancements have been introduced for Essential Caregivers?
-
A resident can go outside with their one designated essential caregiver to enjoy any of our balconies, or garden/sitting areas.
What can you expect as a result of the Provincial Lockdown?
- All residents can have one designated essential caregiver
- Residents are not permitted to leave the JMPC property
- Whether visiting inside or outside, the one designated essential caregiver having direct access to the resident must have their mask in place and must continue to maintain their twice weekly COVID testing as has been in place.
- Essential Caregivers taking a resident outside must not bring other people to meet up and visit with the resident together.
If you have not yet received your vaccine, I would encourage you to book your appointment. For those of you who received their First Vaccine dose at the Strathcona Paper Center between Feb 25-27 2021, we have been advised that you are to contact 1-343-477-0172 in order to book your second dose. You will want to do this ASAP.
Our spring cleanup is starting. We have scheduled a thorough cleaning of our balconies and front garden sitting areas early next week. We will have some of the furniture out for you to enjoy this weekend with the remainder going out next week.
If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext. 7224.

COVID-19 Testing for Essential Caregivers
|
|
You are required to have 2 COVID tests each week.
You will need your regular COVID swab that you have at a COVID Assessment Centre which you will need to have at some point between Wednesday and Sunday each week.
The second swab is the Rapid Antigen Test which will be done at JMPC. We will only be offering this test on Monday’s and Tuesday’s at the times listed below:
9:00am – 10:45am
1:00pm – 3:30pm
6:00pm – 7:00pm
NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff.
Shift change that occurs during testing times are 2:30 and 6:30pm
Exception: If you visit only once per week then you only require the one weekly COVID swab from the COVID Assessment Centre.
The Rapid Antigen Test must be done here at JMPC and will take place in the tea room area. Staff will provide you direction at the time. This test is strictly a surveillance screening test for those who present without symptoms. It is viewed as an addition to the screening tool process.
Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.

|
Perishable Items: Food being brought in for a resident must be in a container that can be wiped down with our wipes and they will then be delivered to your resident right away.
All other items will be kept for 24 hours prior to being taken to the resident.

Mandatory Training Videos
|
|
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building
A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.
Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.
This training needs to be completed prior to your first visit and then monthly thereafter.

Infection Control from the Desk of Emily Sarley
|
|
This is a link to an article written on April 6 2021 that features Dr. Kieran Moore speaking about the sharp rise in the Variants of Concern in the KFLA area.
Wearing your mask at all times, whether you are inside or outside, keeping hand sanitizer close by and using it regularly as well as being very intentional when leaving your own home for only the most necessary of reasons is of paramount importance right now.
For those of you who received their First Vaccine dose at the Strathcona Paper Center between Feb 25-27 2021, we have been advised that you are to contact 1-343-477-0172 in order to book your second dose. You will want to do this ASAP.

Essential Caregiver Designation
|
|
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.
Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiver prior to their visit in order to be permitted into the Home.
Should the resident/POA wish to change an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted in advance.

Let’s talk about Dementia!
|
Do you know what dementia is? One of the most common misconceptions is that dementia itself is the disease when in fact it is an umbrella term for conditions that affect our brain. From a Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer’s Disease – the term dementia is used to capture those conditions that affect memory, communication, mood, personality and the ability to perform day-to-day activities. Alzheimer’s Disease is one type of dementia, also the most common type of irreversible dementias.
|
|
|
Warning Signs of Dementia:
Dementia is not something that will appear overnight. If you notice a significant change in cognition for yourself or your loved one, it may be a result of a complication with a drug, an infection or even a delirium – which is a medical emergency and should not be ignored. Signs of dementia are progressive over time and while some dementias have more step-like stages, most are more of a sloping decline in abilities over time. Dementia is not a normal part of aging. If you are concerned if you are seeing signs of a cognitive impairment, it is vital that you reach out to your healthcare providers as soon as possible.
