Be The Light

“You are the light of the world- like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16 NLT

The word light has several definitions. Some examples are - a source that allows things to be seen; a person’s frame of mind; start something burning; the opposite of dark; the opposite of heavy.  None of these definitions and, yet, all of these definitions pertain to you as “you are the light of the world”.

These definitions are ways that you are not like being a “light of the world”. You are not the sun or a lightbulb or other artificial source of light. You cannot be another person’s frame of mind. You do not have the ability to spontaneously combust. You are not nighttime. You are not a measure of weight.

These same definitions are also how you are like a “light of the world”. You are a source that can help people see Christ. You are a way to guide a person’s frame of mind towards Christ. You are a flame that can start a person’s heart burning for Christ. You are that Biblically knowledgeable person who can illuminate a person’s mind towards Christ. Your smile is the sunshine that can brighten another person’s day. You are that listening person who can ease another person’s burden.

Precious Lord Jesus, You told us that we are to be “the light of the world”. You told us not to hide our light, but, “let your good deeds shine out for all to see”. Why? “so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Thank you for teaching us what to do so that we might give glory to God! Amen.
