Grant’s Teen Court students gain firsthand legal insights

Grant High School's Teen Court Club recently wrapped up its program with an eye-opening field trip to the Van Nuys Courthouse. Spearheaded by PESA and Teen Court Advisor Ms. Johnson, 28 students enthusiastically participated to encounter the legal system firsthand.

In this educational excursion students experienced a comprehensive journey of what it means to be part of the justice system. They toured the courthouse and had the opportunity to engage with a panel of speakers who shared their educational experiences and career pathways. The speakers included judges, lawyers, court stenographer, bailiffs from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and judicial assistants. Students then participated in a Teen Court session, and explored the jail cells before returning to school.

Elizabeth Sosa, the proud Community Representative assigned to Grant High School commended the initiative, emphasizing its profound impact on the students. She remarked, "This trip offers a valuable learning opportunity and firsthand experience. It serves to illuminate the accessibility of careers within the court system, demonstrating that it is attainable." The freshman who attended gained a clearer understanding of what internships to pursue while seniors acquired insight to what majors they may select as they head to college this fall.

Indeed, the field trip not only offered students a glimpse into the legal profession but also empowered them to actively contribute to the court system. By engaging with professionals and experiencing a real Teen Court case, students gained valuable insights into the practical applications of legal principles. In this particular case, student jurors had to assess the cause and evidence before determining rehabilitative conditions for the minor who provoked a physical altercation with a school employee.

Moreover, the experience fostered a sense of empowerment among students, instilling in them the confidence to pursue their aspirations within the legal realm. For many, the field trip served as a pivotal moment of inspiration, igniting a passion for law and justice that may shape their future endeavors.

As PESA continues to collaborate with schools like Grant High School, it reinforces the organization's mission to empower youth and broaden their horizons.
