Message from Nurse Aberdeen:
As we near the end of the school year, I would like to remind you that your child’s medication should be picked up from the clinic by June 3. School policy does not allow for medication to remain in the school over the summer. It will be important for you to make arrangements to pick up your child’s medication since medications may not go home with the student. Any medication left in the clinic after June 3 will be discarded according to policy.
For your convenience, the clinic will be opening August 8, 2022 to accept your child’s medication and completed medication forms for the new school year. Medication forms for the 2022-23 school year will be coming home with your child beginning next week.
If you have any questions, please contact the school clinic at 547-8326. Have a safe and healthy summer!
IMPORTANT MEDIA CENTER DATES:
-
Beginning May 23rd - the media center will be a “QUIET ZONE” before school and after school for students who are preparing for exams, so the regular morning hustle and bustle of our media center will no longer take place. Students will NOT be able to eat lunch in the media center anymore and they will not be allowed to wait in the media center for classes to begin and will not be able to wait for rides after school.
Student textbooks – if your students WILL NOT be needing their textbooks anymore for finals, EOC’s, or any other end of year assessments or projects – PLEASE PLEASE encourage them to start returning as soon as possible so that we can clear their accounts. CONSUMABLES DO NOT NEED TO BE RETURNED. These are books students are able to write in and tear out pages (ELA, Math, SS). Please ask them to take keep those at home and NOT return them to the library. Students who still need to keep textbooks to prepare for exams are absolutely able to and can return their items the last week of school. Mrs. Milian will be sending system-generated emails this weekend to everyone identifying which books need to be returned. Please ignore anything marked as “consumables”. ALL students MUST return their own materials (textbooks, library books, class sets of novels) that have been checked out to them and they cannot have friends, significant others, or siblings do it for them. This is so that we can personally clear their media accounts as they return items.

Nease High School Student Celebrates Teacher Appreciation in the Hindu Tradition
by Pranitha Balavijayalakshmanan & Ms. Suzan Dereli
Earlier this month, students and families all over the country and here at Allen D. Nease High School celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week. In addition to the thoughtful gift cards, notes, and staff lunches, one Nease teacher can add a Hindu celebration to her teacher appreciation experience. On Saturday, May 14, English teacher Ms. Suzan Dereli was an honored guest at this year's Guru Vandana celebration put on by Jacksonville's Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) organization; tenth grade student, Pranitha Balavijayalakshmanan, invited Ms. Dereli for this special recognition.
The HSS is an organization that promotes our region's Hindu culture and community. Honoring teachers is an essential tradition in Indian culture both here and in India. Through the Guru Vandana celebration, the HSS encourages families and school-age children in their community to recognize their teachers in a traditional ceremony. Such events are not just an opportunity to show respect and build relationships, they also keep Hindu traditions and values alive.
The HSS honored 13 teachers this year, ranging from grade school to high school. Also in attendance were family and friends of the students and teachers, as well as leaders of the HSS organization. St. Johns County School Board member Anthony Coleman rounded out the guest list and was also honored for his contribution to education.
Ms. Balavijayalakshmanan and her parents, Bala and Kalpana, welcomed Ms. Dereli and other guests to an event center decorated in traditional Hindu style. Ms. Balavijayalakshmanan and other students opened the festivities with songs, prayers, and games. Then the program shifted to a formal veneration of the teachers. One by one, each teacher was brought to the front of the room, blessed, and honored ceremonially by their student. In turn, the teacher responded with blessings for the student. Then, both student and teacher shared comments about their classroom relationship with the other guests.
The ceremony concluded with each teacher receiving thoughtful gifts from their student and the HSS. The community's generosity was on display the entire evening and was capped off with an abundant and delicious Indian dinner for all who attended.
