Virtual Lecture:

Music & Culture in the Great East: Japan

Synopsis: Japanese music occupies many niches in the country’s social and spiritual life. The shamisen lute is played by geishas and used to accompany Bunraku puppet theater, while the shakuhachi flute is preferred by Zen Buddhist monks. The magnificent koto zither is employed either as a solo instrument or to accompany singing. The “big drums” of the taiko ensemble attract a large public, while the gongs of the gagaku ensemble are associated with royalty. Rather than aiming for orchestral grandeur, Japanese classical music emphasizes subtlety and nuance, reflecting both the animist heritage of Shinto and the influence of Zen Buddhism.

Presenter: Walter Aaron Clark is Distinguished Professor of Musicology at UC Riverside, where he is founder/director of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Music. He has authored and edited numerous books on Ibero-American music and musicians, and he holds the title of Commander of the Order of Isabel the Catholic, a Spanish knighthood. As a musician, he has extensive experience performing in ensembles devoted to the music of Spain, Mexico, the Andes, Philippines, and India. For the past 30 years, he has regularly taught courses on world music.
