Administrator's Corner

Happy Monday Spartans,

What a year it has been! Despite all of the delays, changes, and adversity, we have a lot to celebrate as we near the end of the school year. Like our students and community has done all year, our TJ Spartan Football team showed an incredible amount of resilience and courage on Friday night to come from behind and win TJ's first state championship since 1989. I am so proud of those young men and their incredibly dedicated coaches. Additionally, the support of the students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents, and community was overwhelming. It was a wonderful reminder of why I am so proud to be the Principal of TJ, a school and community like no other. Thanks to everyone who made this possible, especially Mike Griebel and his coaching staff, our Athletic Director Anne Rice, the players, their parents, and all the supporters.
Thank you!

We are also pleased to report that we had a second successful vaccine clinic at TJ on Saturday. Stay tuned for an opportunity for ages 12-15 to get vaccines in the coming weeks.

A couple of important reminders:
  • In person school returns on Tuesday May 18th. All in person students should return to "in-building" learning for a normal Tuesday schedule.
  • May 21st check out for seniors
  • May 24th rehearsal @ 1:00 p.m.
  • May 25th Commencement at noon (details below)
  • Finals will be held the week of May 24th - detailed schedule below.

Thanks, TJ! Let's finish strong!

Happy Monday Spartans,

Gracias, TJ! ¡Acabemos fuerte!

Mike Christoff
Principal
Way to go, Spartans!
  • Our very own Andre Moss is a FINALIST award recipient in the 2020-21 Denver Public Schools Rae Harris Intellectual Curiosity Awards! Andre was a very strong candidate and wound up with a distinguished commendation in a top flight crowd for all of his work, contribution, and investment in all of our TJ Equity teams this year! In addition to his Equity work, Mr. Moss also challenges his students to think outside the box and regularly collaborates with his colleagues to put Students First. Curiosity is so valuable and TJ is so lucky to have Mr. Moss!

Way to go, Spartan artists!

This is amazing work!
Our TJ Teachers & Staff are the very best! To show our gratitude for all they have done over this challenging school year, TJ PTO has lined up some special treats this week. A food truck will be serving up tasty tacos, there will be a sweet treat from Dairy Queen on Friday, and we will show off our appreciation with a new banner that we can reuse for many occasions in the future. Please continue to share messages of gratitude with teachers via an email or note. It means so much to them!

You can find the minutes and the recording from our final 20-21 school year PTO meeting on the TJ website. We will be ramping up in July to set the wheels in motion for the school year ahead!

Did You Know…?

It is TIME FOR FINALS! There are some quick and easy things you can do to prepare for upcoming tests.

Whether we like it or not, the school “testing season” is upon us! Some people stress a lot, a little or not at all. Here are some simple things any test-taker can do to help with preparation for the big day:

1) Get some sleep: Cramming the night before is not the best use of your time. Adolescents need the most amount of sleep per night, and the night before a big test is no difference. Aim for 8-9 hours- plan ahead to go to bed earlier and make sure your alarm is set in the morning to give you plenty of time for breakfast and to get ready.

2) Do something relaxing before bed: Put away your phone and all electronics at least an hour before bed (eye-roll, we know). Take a shower or bath, listen to music, draw, read, color, journal, talk with family, etc.

3) Eat the right food: Dinner the night before and breakfast the morning of- keep it as healthy as possible, and limit sugar and caffeine intake. High-protein foods like scrambled eggs are often best for aiding concentration and minimizing fatigue.

4) Wear comfortable clothing: This would be a good day to wear sweatpants or workout gear that is loose and breathable.

5) Visit the Bathroom 15-30 minutes before: Limit water intake starting an hour before the test.

6) Answer the questions you know: If you come across something that you can’t answer, star it, and move on! Come back to the “starred” after completing all the items you know.

7) Read the question in full before trying to answer it. At least some of the answer choices will be designed to trap students who don’t read the question fully. Also identify the answer first before looking at the answer choices, since some of the choices will be designed to prime you into misinterpreting the question. Don’t jump to conclusions.

8) Take a deep breath: If you become anxious or overwhelmed, take a deep breath, try closing your eyes for a few seconds (but don’t put your head down on the table!). Get back to it! Just do your best.
