Wednesday, May 4th, 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Please join Kate Chen to discuss and reflect on Nikole Hannah-Jones' 1619 Project which sets out to reframe our understanding of American history by placing the consequences of Slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.

Want to explore more about the science of happiness?

Following up on the theme of Rev. Russ's April 3 sermon on How Can Liberals Become Happier?, join UUF member John Jameson to discuss Arthur C. Brooks' essay The Satisfaction Trap on Tuesday, April 26 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm Arthur C. Brooks writes The Atlantic's "How to Build a Life" column and is a professor at Harvard. Click here for a copy of the essay.

Questions to consider in advance of the meeting:
1. How would you distinguish between satisfaction and happiness?
2. How do you sort out "need" vs. "want" vs. "demand"?
3. What do you think about the role of purpose and meaning in life?
4. How do you deal with the fear of "less" and "losing"?
5. How do you deal with "keeping up with the Joneses"?
6. What do you think of Professor Brooks' revised formula for happiness in the context of the three closing suggestions?

April Shared Plate Recipient
Ukraine Emergency Response Fund

The UUSC Ukraine Emergency Response Fund will be the recipient of our shared plate throughout the month of April. We all watch in horror as events in Ukraine unfold, and we seek ways we can help.

UUSC, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, stands ready. Its model of aid is to direct funds to local partner organizations already operating in the region who are best positioned to help the most vulnerable and marginalized.

A representative from UUSC will join us after service virtually on April 24 to tell us more about these efforts and to answer questions.

Other Community Events of Interest

Remembering Those We’ve Loved and Lost
Saturday April 30, 2 - 3:15 pm
Loss during the last two years has been emotionally brutal.
The Santa Cruz Threshold Singers will sing a prayerful hour of songs
to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died.
Held outdoors at the Fellowship.

Volunteering in the Amah Mutsun Native Garden
At the April 3rd service, Andy Kreyche announced a desire to gather a group from the Fellowship to work together in their Amah Mutsun Native Garden. The garden, located at Pie Ranch near Año Nuevo, has volunteer opportunities on the third Saturday of each month. Unfortunately, there are no more volunteer spots available for the work party on April 16th.

Mark your calendar and watch this space for updates, as Andy is working with Pie Ranch to bring a group on May 21st.
