ACADEMIC CONSIDERATION AND DEFERRED EXAM PERIOD

The Academic Consideration Portal is now closed for the Winter 2022 term as the last day of term was April 30th, 2022. As a reminder, the Academic Consideration office verifies the time for which a student is experiencing an extenuating circumstance (e.g., illness) and instructors are responsible for providing details concerning academic consideration options which may be available (e.g., deferred exam) after a students’ consideration request has been processed.

Deferred exams are scheduled to take place May 12 - 20, 2022
Please note that all deferred exams are to be written in the format they were originally scheduled in. For example, if a student’s original exam was scheduled to be in person, they must write their deferred exam in person. If a student’s original exam was scheduled to take place online, they must write their deferred exam online.

The Faculty Office does not approve requests to switch exam formats from in-person to online or vice versa. Students who cannot write in-person exams during the deferred exam period due to extenuating circumstances can submit an academic consideration request through our online Academic Consideration Request Portal.

For more information regarding academic consideration please visit our Academic Consideration Webpage.
HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR SUMMER TERM COURSES

As summer term courses will begin shortly, please review the following health and safety requirements prior to coming to campus:

  • Individuals are required to wear an ASTM F2100 Level 2 medical-grade mask while indoors. Queen’s mandatory masking requirement is currently in place until the end of May 2022, at which time the continuation of the requirement will be reviewed.
  • If you are in contact with a COVID-19 case or experience symptoms of COVID-19, please consult the Ontario government’s COVID-19 self-assessment tool to determine if you should be tested or refer to the university’s Updated Isolation Protocols.

The university is also strongly encouraging everyone to receive vaccinations and boosters, as these remain the best way to protect yourself and the community against serious illness from COVID-19.

For more information, visit Queen’s Safe Return to campus website.
NEW LETTER OF PERMISSION PROCESS (LOP) FOR STUDENTS

We are excited to announce that the Faculty’s Letter of Permission (LOP) process has recently been updated to operate entirely through SOLUS. Students can now easily submit an LOP request, along with making payments, uploading supporting documentation, and viewing the progress of their application - all in one place. The process for staff and faculty will remain unchanged.

Students can visit our Course Options and Planning webpage to learn more about LOPs and the application process.

The application process for an International Letter of Permission differs. If a student is considering taking a course through a school outside of Canada, please direct them to the International Programs Office website for more information.

To learn more about how the faculty is digitizing its processes to improve the student experience read our story: Digitizing FAS processes enhances the student experience.

REMINDER - ASSOCIATE DEAN (GRADUATE STUDIES) IN THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

There is a vacancy for the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) beginning Friday, July 1. Faculty members within FAS are invited to apply for this position to further collaborate with the senior leadership team to realize the academic and research missions of the Faculty as informed by the Faculty’s Strategic Plan and the Principal’s Strategic Priorities.

Graduate students are essential to the research and teaching priorities of FAS. There are 28 units in FAS with graduate programs ranging from professional degrees, course-based programs and research-intensive programs at the Masters and Doctoral level. Working closely with Departmental Graduate Chairs, Graduate Assistants and the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) supports graduate students, supervisors and Departments with the development of new graduate programs and curriculum, recruitment, supervision, financial support and professional development.

Experience with graduate student supervision is essential and experience as a Departmental Graduate Chair would be an asset. FAS is continually exploring opportunities to better support our graduate students, and the new Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) would be able to bring their own innovative ideas to improve the quality of graduate student training in the Faculty.

We are looking for someone who recognizes, respects and promotes the importance of graduate student research and education. We want to consider a diverse pool of candidates, and thus all interested faculty from newly tenured Associate Professor through to Full Professor are encouraged to apply. A demonstrated aptitude for leadership, as evidenced by administrative and leadership roles in graduate studies or other areas of the academy, will be a key consideration when selecting the new Associate Dean (Graduate Studies). Candidates from equity-deserving groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

The deadline for applications is Friday, May 6 with interviews sent to take place Tuesday, May 24. A curriculum vitae and a covering letter outlining the applicant’s motivation and qualifications for the position should be sent to:

Dean Barbara Crow, PhD
