October is National Apple Month!
A few interesting apple facts:

  • Some of the excellent varieties of apples grown in Mississippi include Smoothee, Gala, Arkansas Black, Granny Smith, Fuji, Anna, and Golden Dorsett.
  • Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of fiber.
  • Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit.
  • Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if refrigerated.
  • Apple varieties range in size from a little larger than a cherry to as large as a grapefruit. The largest apple ever picked weighed three pounds.
  • More than 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States but only the crab apple is native to North America.
  • Apples harvested from an average tree can fill 20 boxes that weigh 42 pounds each.
  • Apples are a member of the rose family.
  • A peck of apples weighs 10.5 pounds. A bushel of apples weighs about 42 pounds.
  • It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.
  • What did the apple skin say to the apple? I've got you covered! Priceless.
Not only is this month National Apple Month, National Dessert Day falls in October too!

Farewell to Another Spectacular Fair!
The Mississippi Fair Commission would
like to thank all of you for joining us
at the 159th Mississippi State Fair.
The weather, although quite warm some
of the time, ended on a cool and glorious note.
With twelve days of good food, fun rides, entertaining music, inspirational livestock shows, and free biscuits, what more could you ask for?

October is National
Farm to School Month!
Mississippi Farm to School Week was introduced to encourage the serving of locally grown and locally raised agricultural products in school meals and to recognize the substantial economic health benefits to farm to school programs.

The Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce have partnered for 16 years to increase the volume of Mississippi products served in schools through the US Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

Enjoy a hayride, explore Small Town and check out the pumpkin patch. There is so much fun to be had at the Mississippi Ag Museum.
Fresh Savings at the MFM
T he Mississippi Farmers Market offers
AARP's Fresh Savings Program to
customers each Saturday
from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
The program allows SNAP-eligible
participants to earn $20 extra to spend
on fruits and vegetables
if they spend an initial $20.
THE FARMER'S TABLE
The Farmer's Table is located at the Mississippi Farmers Market. It is open Tuesday through Friday from
7 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. - until. The restaurant serves dine in or carry out breakfast and lunch.
