HOMEWARD BOUND

Southwest Oasis Labrador Rescue

We've Got News

"Homeward Bound" is a newsletter from Southwest Oasis Labrador Rescue (SOLR).

In each issue, we bring you stories about our rescue work and the wonderful people who make our mission possible.

Rescued

"Rescued" is a regular feature about some very special rescue missions. Percy (yellow) and Mabel (chocolate) are pictured above while awaiting rescue in the shelter.

Letting Go

By Nancy Schuessler

Not every rescue has a happy ending.

Mabel and Percy were only three months old when taken to a small, local shelter. Sadly, the shelter was full and unable to help. They told the owners to contact a rescue group. Instead, as they drove away, they abandoned the puppies on the roadside. The shelter turned to us for help.

Samantha and Riky Richter agreed to foster both pups. They picked them up on Sunday, January 7, 2024, around 10:30 in the morning. It was a happy day for the Richters, and the furthest thing from Samantha’s mind was a deadly disease called Parvo. “All we knew when we picked them up was that both dogs had some diarrhea. It wasn’t until we got them home and settled that I started to realize something wasn’t right,” says Sam. “They were lethargic. Even after they were bathed and took a long nap."

Sam trusted her senses. She knew that rescue dogs can be exhausted from their journey, but something was wrong. Besides diarrhea, neither dog would eat or drink and they could hardly move. She alerted SOLR’s medical team. By morning, Sam was driving to the emergency veterinary hospital. “It took me 1.5 hours in Monday morning traffic to get them to the hospital. Little did I know it would be the last time I saw or hugged them,” she says.

The pups had contacted Parvo -- a highly contagious virus that can cause severe illness and death in young, unvaccinated dogs. Apparently, the pups had been exposed before being rescued.

Little Mabel passed away first. Percy lasted a bit longer. “He was an incredible fighter,” says Sam. “He fought to the end until his little body just gave out on him.” He died on January 14th – only six days after being rescued. His vet tech stayed on the floor with Percy the entire night, holding him in his arms.

The heartbreak has been difficult for Sam and her family, but having the support of the SOLR community has helped. “People have reached out to us and each one has been so thoughtful and kind during this hard time. We didn’t have them long, but we loved them hard.”

Her eight-year-old daughter, Rowen, will always remember Percy through her art. “She fell in love with both, but especially Percy. She is in her Harry Potter-loving stage, and there is a character in the books named Percy. As sick as we knew they were, we still held out hope.”

Despite all the sadness, Sam says they will foster again. And it will be puppies. “Even though we lost these babies, we know there are so many more to save. No matter the heartbreak, we will keep on keeping on.”

“We are still pretty shaken up over losing them, but each day gets a little better, says Sam Richter. "They will stick with us for the rest of our lives.”

Rowen turned to art after losing Percy.

Percy fought hard throughout the night, but his little body could not fight the infection any longer. His vet tech stayed on the floor all night holding him.

Samatha and Riky Richter joined SOLR in June 2023. They are true animal lovers who have been fostering puppies and kittens for over ten years. In addition to Percy and Mabel, they've fostered Stella, Sadie, Piper, Yogi, Spike, and now Wrigley for SOLR.

Sam's advice to new fosters? "Trust your intuition. If something doesn't feel right, don't question it. Act on it right away. Maybe it could be nothing, but sometimes it is a mighty big something and you could save their lives by acting quickly."

The Price of Saving Puppies

No one would want to turn away a puppy in need of life-saving medical care, but did you know that one night in a veterinary clinic can cost thousands? The final bill for Percy and Mabel? More than $12,000!

Help us continue to give dogs in need the life-saving care they deserve by donating to our medical fund. Together, we can save them.

Loving Labradors

It's very special when past adopters send us photos of their adopted Labradors. We love getting photos from our fosters, too. Here are a few heartwarming moments from both.

Do you remember Bearon (Bear)? He was rescued from Mexico in 2019 with a broken leg and adopted by Daniel and Jessica Cwiak.

No more broken leg for Bearon (Bear), who celebrated his 5th birthday in his forever family with cake and tiarra.

Shasta 3 (now Ellie Mae) is a fantastic power napper on the recliner and she even pushes the button to go to zero gravity," says Lisette Breto, who "foster failed" and adopted Shasta 3 in February.

Pru gives a loving look to Tim Mouser, one of our intake volunteers, during transportation to SOLR.

"Rosie is my heart and soul," says Becky Dawson, who "foster failed" and adopted Rosie in 2023."I love her so much! She is the foster mom to all my fosters and the emotional support for every scared pup."

Mark and Jenifer Boyce fell in love with bonded pair, Lily 3 and Raven 4. They adopted both girls in February.

Toby and Nora were adopted by Melissa and Robin Dolezal in 2023. They came to SOLR separately but ended up bonding together while they were in their foster home.

"Toby and Nora are doing great," says Melissa. They did a romp around the yard recently in new bandanas after a grooming session.

"Abby still wants to sit in Dad’s lap like she did as a puppy every morning,” says Donna Seiber, who adopted Abby in March 2023.

Winnie celebrates Valentine's Day with Rhonda Burcham, who volunteers for SOLR.

Buddy 11 enjoys golfing with his new dad and hanging out with the grandkids. He was adopted by Jim and Wava Baker last July.

Buddy 11 came to SOLR after his owner passed away, but he is living a great life now with the Bakers.

"George still chases his tail and throws his toys in the air," says Tom Mooney, who adopted George in 2023. "And he still has the zoomies."

"I keep hearing, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie where are you? Mom, where’s Charlie?" says Sarah Holmgren. "Kinda hard to miss him since his head is as tall as our counters." Sarah is currently fostering Charlie 13 whom she calls her "Gentle Giant."

Buddy 12 is another power napper. He was adopted last November by Melissa and George Ramos.

"After losing Mabel and Percy, we were super nervous to foster a puppy again," says Samatha Richter. "However, Wrigley continues to heal our hearts and teach us this is why we do what we do." (Read the story of Mabel and Percy above.)

Look What We've Done!

Can you guess how many dogs we rescued last year?

In 2023, we saved 243 dogs from homelessness and completed 249 adoptions. That's almost one rescue (and one adoption) every other day.

Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers and donors!

Really, you're great!
SOLR has rescued hundreds of grateful Labradors -- and it's all thanks to our generous donors and wonderful volunteers. We can't save dogs without you.

You're great! You give hope, love, and life itself to dogs that would otherwise be homeless and hungry.

We thank you. The dogs thank you. Ruff! Ruff! Ruff! It wouldn't be possible without you.
