MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH
CALLING CHANGES FOR TEXAS
TCA LETTER IN SUPPORT OF HB 1505
MAY: MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH
During Military Appreciation Month, the Texas Cable Association and our five cable company members join with the rest of the nation to celebrate our nation’s armed forces and express our gratitude to troops and their families for their service.

But cable doesn’t confine its military appreciation to one day or one month. Cable companies are focused on training and hiring military veterans, supporting military community organizations, offering special programs such as low-cost broadband, and more.
CALLING CHANGES FOR TEXAS
Texans in seven area codes across the state now must dial 10 digits to make a phone call – a change that could save lives.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in July approved 988 as the three-digit abbreviated dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The FCC’s order requires all telecommunications providers – including cable, which provides digital landline service and (for some cable providers) wireless service – to make network changes to ensure 988 access by July 16, 2022.
TCA LETTER IN SUPPORT OF HB 1505
Broadband expansion will require access to existing poles

Cable providers have long worked to help close the digital divide so that all can attend school, work, access health care, etc., no matter where they live. But we cannot achieve this goal alone.

The Texas Cable Association and Texas cable companies are committed to work with Gov. Abbott and legislators to expand broadband access across Texas. To do this, certain roadblocks must be removed to make deployment more efficient and affordable.

Gaining access to certain utility poles — the state’s communications infrastructure backbone in rural areas — is a huge obstacle we face in order to serve new areas. The process to attach broadband equipment to these poles can be complex and costly.

House Bill 1505 by Rep. Chris Paddie would streamline processes, reduce delays and rein in excessive costs. Passage would help achieve the ultimate goal — helping rural Texans who need and are waiting for broadband access.
