The national conference of ACES: The Society for Editing took place last week in San Antonio, Texas. Gerri Berendzen presented a session, "Verifying Information on the Fly," and Lisa McLendon presented two sessions on grammar. Students Sarah Moore and Morgan Vanderwege also attended. McLendon was elected vice president of the ACES Education Fund, the arm of ACES that raises money for scholarships. Call for proposals for 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award |
The school's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee announces a Call for Proposals for the 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award. The $5,000 research award, which is open to faculty and graduate students, aims to promote applied research in an area of mass communication science that can directly benefit our understanding, acknowledgment, interaction with, research and/or acceptance of diversity. The call for proposals and detailed instructions about the submission and review process can be found here. Proposals will be accepted between 8 a.m. April 30 and 5 p.m. May 2. The Samuel L. Adams Emerging Voices in Journalism Fund will ensure that future generations of journalism students get the opportunity to turn their dreams into reality. Adams, who was a pioneer among Black journalists, was a professor of journalism at KU from 1973 to 1999. He was honored by many national organizations for his contributions to journalism and his efforts to advance minorities in the field. Learn more here and contribute.
Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, was a judge for the business ethics competition at the Kansas Future Business Leaders of America Conference on March 31 in Topeka.
It's Graduate Student Appreciation Week, and the J-School will recognize students on Friday, April 8, for Graduate Student Appreciation Day from noon to 1 p.m. in Clarkson Gallery.

The University Daily Kansan won three awards in the nationwide College Media Business & Advertising Managers (CMBAM) awards:
- First Place, Best Guerrilla Marketing Strategy/Program/Event: Kansan posters and confetti
- Second Place, Best New Idea: Wall Street Wednesdays event series
- Honorable Mention, Best Non-Traditional Revenue-Generating Operation: Honor the Honor Boxes, public/media relations and donations program tied to recognition and removal of the print-edition distribution boxes on campus.
Applications are now open for summer and fall Kansan editor and business manager. The editor leads the Kansan newsroom, a team that gathers and presents all news, sports, features and other content online, through social channels, in print and other distribution platforms. The business manager leads a team that has ranged from 20 to 30 and makes decisions about advertising and sponsorship sales, marketing and public relations as well as events and campus activations. Applications should include a cover email, a plan for what you would do as editor or business manager and a copy of your resume. Email application to Rob Karwath at [email protected].

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters Student Seminar for Kansas high school and college broadcast journalism students is April 7 at the Kansas Union. The event will feature a panel of industry experts, airchecks, a career fair and roundtable discussion, plus the 2022 Student Broadcast Awards. Learn more and register here.
The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) educates young people from around the world in the fundamental principles of American democracy and the free market system. The eight-week TFAS Academic Internship Program includes:
- A guaranteed internship placement
- Courses for credit from George Mason University
- Furnished housing in Washington, D.C.
- Opportunities for networking + professional development
The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is a 12-week paid fellowship program at a Hearst television station. Applicants must be completing their senior year of college or graduate school and be graduating in the summer of 2022 (May-August). They must have demonstrated an interest in and ability to produce news, either for television, radio or online, excellent writing skills, a demonstrated ability to produce a newscast, and a good base of editorial judgment. Applicants must have a strong academic record and two recommendations from faculty or internship supervisors. They must be willing to spend 12 weeks post-graduation at a Hearst television station of the company’s choosing and be willing to relocate to an appointed employing Hearst station after finishing the program.
