The New Organ Allocation System
Old Allocation
New Allocation
On March 15th 2021, the allocation of kidneys was changed from a local-regional system known as region 9, which included primarily New York State, to a new allocation system which is a much wider regional system that now expands to a radius of 250 miles from our center (see diagram).

This increase in coverage area means our patients have primary access to a much greater number of available organ offers compared to the prior allocation system. We are now receiving far more organ offers than we have in past, and we have seen a significant increase in our transplant rates.

We anticipate this positive change will increase access and opportunities to more organs for our patients, and anticipate it may decrease waiting times going forward.
Pediatric Kidney Transplant: Patient Spotlight
For Donate Life month, Dr. Juhi Kumar, Medical Director of the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program, had a visit from one of her newly transplanted patients, Nathaniel Aiken, age 10.

Nathaniel was transplanted on February 19th, 2021. During his visit he shared a sweet and courageous message with the team. He said for all the other children awaiting transplant "Be Brave. You will be okay."
