Coming Soon ... The Bookmobile
Jefferson City Schools is proud to announce the bookmobile, soon to be known as "The Big Red Reading Bus," will be completed by February of 2022, just in time for JA's Share the Love of Reading event. Bus # 93-1 was donated by the JCS BOE office for the purpose of creating a bookmobile for students who live inside the city limits of Jefferson. After the bookmobile is finished, it will travel to neighborhoods, on a pre-arranged schedule during school and summer breaks, and allow students a chance to check out a wide variety of educational books. The book collection will include fiction and biography selections ranging in reading levels from kindergarten to eighth grade.

This project began at the end of last school year and is a collaborative effort between JA Media Specialist Ms. Marion Stem, community volunteers Mr. Tim Booth, Ms. Pat Salsman, and Mr. Holden Newbury, fourth-grade teacher Ms. Sherry Booth, BioSTEAM Coordinator Liz French, the JCS transportation department, and the JHS construction class. Mr. Calloway's construction class will be assisting Ms. Stem in the installation of the bookshelves. Outside of mechanical work to the bus and some heavy lifting, Ms. Stem, Ms. Salsman, and Ms. Booth have done most of the work themselves. With the seats pulled out and the initial coats of paint completed, the bookmobile is underway to provide our students an opportunity to self-select books.
FFA National Convention
A group of students from the JHS and JMS FFA traveled to the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana from October 26th until October 30th. While at the convention, students attended general sessions, observed the Creed Speaking finals, the Conduct of Chapter Meetings, and other competitions. The group attended the opening session and heard keynote speaker Courtenay DeHoff, television host and agricultural advocate. They also attended the second general session where national winners were announced in various competition categories. JHS Alumni, Samantha Ayoub, and TJ Tonge were awarded the American Degree, the highest award given by the FFA organization. Joey Blackstock was also named a National Proficiency Finalist in Agricultural Sales. Congratulations are in order for these distinguished individuals!
REACH Georgia Scholarships
REACH Georgia is a needs-based mentorship and college scholarship program that identifies academically promising students in eighth grade. The purpose is to provide academic, social, and college planning support needed to graduate from high school, access college, and achieve post-secondary success. Selected students will receive mentorship as they progress through high school to assist them in maintaining a high academic standard, good attendance, a clean discipline record, and earning a qualifying HOPE Scholarship GPA upon high school graduation. Combined with the HOPE Scholarship and Federal Pell Grant eligibility, students could potentially receive up to $54,000 for college.

According to the official site, REACH Georgia is the State of Georgia's first needs-based mentorship and college scholarship program. The 2021-2022 school year is the first year of Jefferson City School's participation and will announce the first cohort of REACH Scholars later next week at the November 11th Board of Education meeting. Five students will be recognized to represent the first-year cohort and in subsequent years, three students will be identified as Reach Scholars. The Jefferson City School Foundation, serving as the program's community partner, has committed to providing the matching local funds for the REACH Scholar Program.

Candidates nominated by the selection team, along with their parents, met with the Central office and Jefferson Middle School Administration during an informative parent session in early October and provided consent for their students to participate in the selection process. The process included the students completing an online application and participating in interviews with the members of the Jefferson Foundation. The committee was highly impressed with the maturity and presentations of all the candidates, remarking how difficult the final selection would be for them.

JES Fall Festival
On Saturday, October 23rd, the Jefferson Elementary School PTO held the annual Fall Festival on the front field. Parents and staff joined together to provide a day of fun, food, and fellowship for all. The children enjoyed bouncy houses, a train ride, games, and great food. The event concluded with a silent auction of baskets created by items donated in the themes of UGA, camping, games, gift cards, and more. What a wonderful way to enjoy our school, community, and the partnerships that exist between us all. Thank you to everyone for making this great day happen!
We are in need of school nutrition substitutes to work in all four of our cafeterias on an as-needed basis. If you or someone you know are interested in this opportunity, please contact our Director of Nutrition Sue Perry at sue.perry@jeffcityschools.org.
