Market brings sense of community to Pine Street |
CAMBRIDGE — The clouds opened up over Pine Street Community Market just in time to let the sun shine down Friday afternoon for a ribbon-cutting event.
The ribbon-cutting, hosted by the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce, brought together community members and local and state officials to celebrate the opening of the market, a convenience store with a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner — from eggs and home fries to hamburgers and subs.
For Pine Street Community Market owner Eddie Beasley, the opening of the market has been a long time coming. He’s been working on getting it opened since 2015.
“I just feel like I’ve done something,” he said. “I was in the 10th grade when Pine Street had the fire and burned down all the businesses. And from then until now, there was always this talk about building it back. So this is a great start.”
In 1967, a fire burned much of Pine Street. The fire broke out after activist H. Rap Brown gave a speech in town. Because the Cambridge Rescue Fire Company took hours to arrive on the scene, the fire to spread to much of the street.
Beasley said Pine Street Community Market “is doing the old-fashioned thing,” with plans to add more to the menu.
“The food is old-fashioned,” he said. “We’re making our hamburgers up from scratch.”

Federal Funds to help Habitat Choptank build neighborhood |
TRAPPE — Habitat for Humanity Choptank is one of 26 organizations on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to receive direct federal resources for projects as a result of efforts by U.S. Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin.
On March 14, President Joe Biden signed into law $32.5 million dollars in federal funding for the projects put forth by these organizations that Van Hollen and Cardin then championed at a federal level to benefit Shore residents in a variety of areas, including community development, historical and cultural initiatives, infrastructure, public safety, environment and education, and workforce development.
Overall, the Senators included over $200 million in federal dollars directly for Maryland through the fiscal year 2024 government funding bills.

UM Shore Health's Khalid Kurtom and Wendy Towers on Brain Injuries and Advances in Neurosurgery |
Anyone who has ever had a chat with neurosurgeon Khalid Kurtom, MD, at UM Shore Health knows firsthand his extraordinary grasp of knowledge of his chosen field but may not realize his in-depth understanding of both the profound complexity and rapid advances in neuroscience and neurosurgery. And that’s why the Spy always welcomes the opportunity to spend time with him.
This time around, we sat down with him and his longtime colleague, nurse practitioner Wendy Towers, to discuss the differences in brain injuries, detailing how they are classified into mild, moderate, and severe categories based on their severity. Mild injuries, usually from minor incidents like falls, require short-term observation and scanning before patients are released with follow-up instructions. Moderate injuries necessitate overnight hospitalization and possibly interventions if there is bleeding in the brain. Severe injuries involve comatose patients who often need to be flown to specialized centers for extensive neurocritical care.
Symptoms of brain injuries can vary but commonly include headaches, confusion, slurred speech, and often a lack of self-awareness that anything is wrong. These indicators often prompt family members to seek medical attention for the patient. More severe cases can progress to more concerning neurological symptoms such as weakness, numbness, vision troubles, and memory issues, typically leading to hospital admission and repeated scanning.
Both Kurtom and Towers highlight two particularly vulnerable groups: the elderly, who may underestimate minor head traumas, and athletes, who are prone to concussions with lingering effects like trouble sleeping and focusing.
Finally, the two discuss advancements in neurosurgery, emphasizing the shift from traditional methods to cutting-edge techniques like robotic surgery and navigational imaging tools that allow precise interventions, significantly reducing hospital stays and improving recovery outcomes.
This video is approximately ten minutes in length. For more information about Neurosurgery at UM Shore Health please go here.

Investing 101: How Investing & Payout Strategies Impact an Endowment
Join us for an informal conversation to learn how investing works, beginning with understanding the reason to invest as well as how institutions differ from individuals. We will touch on a broad spectrum of topics including risk tolerance, time horizon, asset allocation, market fluctuations, diversification, rebalancing, and the importance of fiduciary responsibilities. Building on our foundational knowledge, we then dig deeper into payout rates and spending policy and the various methods used to address four critical decisions. More importantly, we will discuss how all these topics work in concert to create and endowment that can remain sustainable forever.
The session will be presented by James L. Ross II, AIF®, Managing Director, and Senior Investment Consultant at Mason Investment Advisory Services. Mr. Ross joined Mason Investment Advisory Services in April 2016. Prior to that date, Mr. Ross worked for Lancaster Pollard as Vice President of Institutional Investments. He has also held positions as a Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley and managed an advisory team at Merrill Lynch. James has more than 17 years working with nonprofit institutional clients. He received a Bachelor of Arts in both History and Economics from Denison University. He earned his Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation in 2016. Mr. Ross is a member of Mason’s Investment Committee and is a frequent speaker on topics relating to institutional investment consulting and nonprofit endowments. In his spare time, James enjoys traveling for new adventures, cooking for family and friends and surfing.

"Old Trinity Church" A presentation by SDFM
South Dorchester Folk Museum presents:
"Old Trinity Church: What Colonial Church Architecture Can Tell Us About The Faith that Founded a Nation"
Speaker: Rev. Dan Dunlap
In terms of American architecture, historians use the term "colonial" in two ways: (1) any building constructed before the American Revolution, and (2) transplanting one's culture into a new geographical setting. This second definition often assumes that early settlers from Europe simply brought their old-world architectural ideas with them when they arrived on these shores. But does this hold true for the churches they built? Soon to celebrate its 350th anniversary, Old Trinity Church in Dorchester County, Maryland, near the village of Church Creek, is one of the oldest church buildings still used for regular worship in the nation. Perfectly restored in the 1950s, this colonial church opens a unique window into the religious context of Maryland's earliest settlers, while also making it an interesting case study to better understand the faith that founded a nation.
Before becoming Rector of Old Trinity Church, Rev. Dunlap served parishes in Philadelphia, PA; Exeter, UK; and Tomball, TX. He received his doctorate in historical theology from Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, in 2001, and has taught at various seminaries and colleges. Before coming to Dorchester County, he served as Professor of Historical Theology and Worship at Houston Graduate School of Theology for ten years and as Dean of the Faculty for five years. Lately he has enjoyed teaching for the Institute of Adult Learning at Chesapeake College (Cambridge Center) in the areas of Science & Religion and Christian History.
The South Dorchester Folk Museum (SDFM), in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, presents this FREE program in its lecture series about local history. For more information about the SDFM, visit our website, www.sdfmuseum.net, or call 410-228-6175. The public is warmly invited to attend. Reservations are not needed.
