Like most adults raised in the United States, I didn’t have many conversations about race, bias and prejudice integrated in my K-12 curriculum. Some school districts, including Shorewood are actively working to change this deficiency. As an organization located in an inner-ring suburb of one of the most racially segregated cities in the US, we are focused on life-long learning and providing educational opportunities regarding how the greater Milwaukee area got here and how we can move forward. This takes resolve and a certain level of repetition.
The very first goal of our strategic plan is to foster community connections. The plan states: “We are an important place for our community to come together and learn from and with each other. We will work to help find common ground and increase understanding, even around controversial topics.” I hope you’ll consider joining us on November 9, so we can learn from and with each other.

UNDERSTANDING RACISM AS A THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH
|
Join us on Zoom on Tuesday, November 9th at 6:30 PM as Reggie Jackson and Dr. Fran Kaplan present Understanding Racism as a Threat to Public Health. In 2019, Milwaukee County became the first place in the United States to declare racism a public health crisis. The county then began to establish a racial equity mindset, practices, and policies in its mission to turn Milwaukee from one of the unhealthiest counties in Wisconsin to the healthiest. To date, nearly 200 governmental units around the country have followed Milwaukee’s lead.
In this presentation, Reggie Jackson and Dr. Fran Kaplan will expand our understanding of racism as a social determinant to health locally, regionally and nationally; they will examine how successful public health campaigns have made our lives better by moving us beyond long-standing but unhealthy cultural practices; and they will increase your desire for and ability to work towards racial equity in your sphere of influence.
Registration is required for this event, and you can register online HERE. Contact the library via phone at 414-847-2670 or via email at shorewood@mcfls.org to arrange accommodations for this virtual event.

GENEALOGY RESOURCES AT THE LIBRARY
|
|
As the holiday season quickly approaches, this is a great time to start or continue learning about your family history. While there are plenty of ways to learn about your family history on your own, such as interviewing your extended family members or organizing your family photos, the library also offers access to a wealth of genealogy resources.
One of these resources is Ancestry Library Edition, which is available to use at the library without a library card or from home with a library card through December 2021. Ancestry Library Edition provides access to primary sources like census records, military records, historical maps, immigration records, and many more.
You can learn more about genealogy resources available at the library and find guides to help you get started HERE.

TAKE THE WPLC ANNUAL SURVEY
|
|
|
The Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC) invites you to participate in their annual patron survey! The WPLC seeks your valuable feedback on your experience with and the collection of materials in Wisconsin's Digital Library. Your input will help guide us as we continue to grow and develop the collection of eBooks, audiobooks, and other digital materials so it is most relevant to Wisconsin library patrons. If you use Overdrive or Libby to access eBooks, digital audiobooks, or eMagazines, we would love to hear from you.
This survey is performed annually, and some questions are repeated from year to year. It will take an average of 10-15 minutes to complete and is available through November 5th. You can access the survey HERE.

HOLIDAY BOOK TALK ON DECEMBER 4TH
|
One of the reasons I love the month of December is because it’s when the Friends of Shorewood Public Library host our annual Holiday Book Talk and Sale. Once again this year, on Saturday, December 4th at 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM, Daniel Goldin of Boswell Book Company will entertain us with some of his top book purchases of 2021—perfect for gift giving or to read yourself. He’ll also regale us with the inside scoop about authors, their agents, and editors.
As we did last year, the Friends (with help from our great librarians) will host the Book Talk Zoom—to keep us all safe for the holidays. Information on how to log in to this Zoom event is available HERE.
After Daniel’s talk, we invite you to purchase books. You can order online from Boswell Books or venture out to the store on Downer Ave. If you make your purchases on Saturday, December 4th or Sunday, December 5th and indicate “Friends of Shorewood Library,” Boswell Books will make a 10% donation to the Friends! A truly wonderful holiday gift that we will use to buy more books for the library!
One more enticement about this year’s Book Talk: you may have heard whispers about Shorewood Reads happening in April 2022. Shorewood Reads strives to create a culture of reading in our community by bringing people together as they discuss important topics and ideas with a community read. In past years, we’ve featured great novels such as Nickolas Butler’s Shotgun Lovesongs and Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven. As an added bonus at this year’s Holiday Book Talk, Daniel Goldin will announce the title of the book chosen for Shorewood Reads 2022! So, tune in and be one of the first to know the title of our next great community read, which we’re currently planning to have live, in-person as well as live-streamed!
I hope you’ll join me on Zoom on Saturday, December 4th at 11 a.m. for one of the best events of the holiday season!

What happens after a disastrous blind date between a free-spirited astrologer and an uptight actuary? Why, a fake relationship to fool their families over the holidays, of course! But as Darcy and Elle get to know each other, they both begin to question just how much of their relationship is fake after all. Bellefleur’s writing continually swaps between the perspectives of the lovers, allowing readers into both of their worlds and offering an intimate understanding of their experiences and feelings. Winner of the 2021 Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Romance, Written in the Stars is an adorable rom-com read for the holidays!

A debut novel by Kawai Strong Washburn, Sharks tells the story of a Hawaiian family living in a "modern but mystical" version of the Hawaiian archipelago as they navigate raising three kids who are navigating their own relationships with one another, with their parents, and with the larger world. They each face hardships, share a tragedy, and learn to make sense of a mystical homeland that both haunts and heals them. Each chapter is told by a particular character, giving color and depth to this fantastic, engaging story. Check it out and suspend your disbelief!

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
|
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about the vaccination rollout, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
