President’s Message

Dear Friends,

As I finish my term as your President, I look back on these 2 years and I am thankful for the opportunity to lead this amazing organization of fantastic women.

I believe that as a steward of an organization that you should leave it in a better place than you found it. Although it was challenging at times, especially due to COVID, I believe that this was achieved.

The climate is totally different in the world and the golf world from when I started on the Board. The good news is that golf is more popular than ever. However, this makes the way our chapter has to operate different. But change can be good if it is embraced.

I am thankful that we were able to reinvent ourselves to keep the things that were working in place, improve the things that needed improvement and develop new things that were missing.

I am also so thankful for each and every Board member and volunteer I had the privilege of working with to continue to move our chapter forward.

There is still work to be done and I believe in the viability of the LPGA Amateur Association. The organization is in good hands both on the National level and on our local level. The national staff has been transformed in the last two years and is top notch. Many more opportunities and benefits will be rolling out in the months to come. On the local level we have expanded our leadership team and have recruited a very capable group of ladies to continue the progress of leading our chapter forward.

I am confident that the best is yet to come!

Regards,
Jane A. Egan

HOLE-IN-ONE!
Karen on 9th Hole Pinch Brook GC
CONGRATULATIONS TO KARYN COHEN FOR HER HOLE IN ONE!!!!!

Karyn was playing in her regular weekly Northern New Jersey LPGA Amateur Wednesday league run by Phyllis Kaplan and Diana Galer at Pinch Brook Golf Course in Florham Park, NJ on July 21st.

She was playing with Mary Cobb and Jane Kurek . The Hole in One was on the 9th hole and was about 105 yards over some water. She used a 4 rescue and did see the ball bounce on the green, but when they got to the green the ball was nowhere in sight. Jane and Karyn looked everywhere the ball could have rolled while Mary finished her last putt. They were still looking for the ball when Mary reached into the hole to get her ball and there was Karyn’s ball!! Karyn’s ball must have hit the green and rolled in the hole where they, of course, did not look.

It was totally unexpected by Karyn so she was surprised and very excited. They celebrated at their weekly pizza dinner. Karyn says “It was great fun with a great group!”
Have you had a hole-in-one this season? Share it with Chapter members! Forward the information and any photos for inclusion in an upcoming issue of Bunker Buzz and on our Social Media platforms to ChapterComminications@LPGAAmateursNNJ.com!

2021 Play for P.I.N.K.
We had a great turnout and a wonderful day at our 2021 "Play For P.I.N.K." charitable event on July 27th held at Black Bear Golf Club. The weather was perfect, the course was in great shape, we raised over $4,100 for breast cancer research, and a good time was had by all! Check out some fun photos from the event! The success of the event was made possible by the attendees, direct donations and friends of the chapter tricky tray donations. Thanks to all that attended and contributed for your support!

LEAGUE COORDINATOR SPOTLIGHT
Photo of Janet Solberg

Meet League Coordinator Janet Solberg!
This month’s spotlight features Janet Solberg, coordinator of the Wednesday Travel League.  Janet hails from Newton, NJ in Sussex County and has been a member of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of EWGA/LPGA Amateurs since 2011.

Janet began golfing when she was 34 years old, after her friends asked her if she wanted to join them one day and has been hooked ever since!

Consistent with Janet’s generous spirit, she decided to be a league coordinator because they needed someone to take over the job, so she thought she would give it a try. With her outgoing personality, Janet particularly enjoys all the people she meets being an LPGA Amateurs member. When not playing golf Janet really enjoys traveling and spending time with friends. Those of you who already know Janet may be surprised that her nickname is “Stretch”. Janet played baseball with boys when she was younger. The coach gave her the nickname “Stretch” and when she was in college more people knew her by her nickname than her real name!

To those women who have never played golf, but who might be interested in getting started Janet offers this advice: “Just give it a try. Take a lesson see how you like it.” There are plenty of opportunities to play and take lessons as an LPGA Amateurs member!

Thank you, Janet, for all you do and continue to do for our organization.
Rules of Golf
Interested in learning more about the Rules of Golf?
We have the place for you!
The USGA maintains an online resource where golfers can Explore the Rules of Golf, Learn the Rules of Golf and find Other Rules Resources at https://rules.usga.org.

For golfers with an interest in learning the Rules of Golf in greater detail, you can enroll in the USGA Short Course on the Rules - Season Two by going to the homepage for Rules  https://rules.usga.org/  and under the "Learn the Rules of Golf" section click on the "Rules Short Course" or by going directly there: https://rules.usga.org/course-catalog/

A Short Course on the Rules” is an educational tool that is designed to help both Rules experts as well as those who are just starting out on their journey to learn the Rules. The Short Course is offered in annual seasons and takes a deep dive into a specific Rules topic in each “round” of that season. Season 1 wrapped up in 2020, but all of the content is still available below. Season 2 is underway and will run throughout 2021.

See below for some highlights of what is offered with each round:
  • Practice Area – Designed for those earlier in their Rules journey or those looking for a refresher, the Practice Area lays out the essentials of the topic being covered in that round. It includes written content, test-your-knowledge questions, and an original, detailed video overview from one of our Rules experts.
  • Quiz – “Play” our 9-hole Rules quiz to test your knowledge and get your name on the leaderboard. For those who participated in Season 1, the quiz in Season 2 will be expert-level (similar to last year’s Back Nine of the quiz).
  • Season Leaderboard – In addition to the leaderboard for each round, we will maintain a cumulative, season-long leaderboard for all of Season 2.
  • Live Round Recap Webinar – A live webinar with USGA Rules Staff recapping the round’s topic, reviewing select quiz questions in detail, and providing you with the opportunity to ask questions in real time.
  • Thoughts on the Round” – A video recorded by USGA Rules Staff providing detailed insights and explanations of every question from the quiz.

For Season 2, each round of the Short Course will follow a 5 week cadence:
  • Weeks One and Two – The Practice Area is launched and available for review.
  • Weeks Three and Four – The 9-question, expert-level quiz is launched and available for two weeks.
  • Week Five – The live Round Recap webinar is conducted and Thoughts on the Round are released.

We hope you enjoy the Short Course!
**A note about the blue Login/Register option at top right of the main page  – This will only be required when taking the Short Course quiz for each round. But feel free to create your account any time! This single USGA Rules account/login will be integrated into more experiences in the future. Stay tuned!
