IN MEMORY: DR. MARVIN RALLISON

Dr. Marvin Rallison, for whom yesterday's Grand Rounds was named, recently passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Dr. Rallison joined the University of Utah in 1972 as the first Pediatric Endocrinologist. That same year, he instituted the inpatient diabetes education program. The outpatient diabetes clinic was started in 1975 with Dr. Stanley Childs, a local pediatrician, and a team consisting of an RN, RD, RPh and MSW. The clinic began with a total of 50 visits that year; now we have 7000 visits per year! In the 1980s and 90s, the team traveled throughout Utah to outreach clinics in Vernal, West Jordan, Logan, St. George, Richfield, Gunnison, Price, Murray, Sandy, Odgen, and Provo as well as to Rock Springs, Wyoming. Dr. Rallison was also the founder of the diabetes camp program in Utah.

During his career, Dr. Rallison made an impact on the field of pediatric endocrinology. In 1972, along with a senior medical student, he described a newly identified syndrome of infancy-onset diabetes which became known as the Wolcott-Rallison syndrome. The genetic disorder is characterized by permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus and skeletal dysplasia. The underlying genetic mutation has since been identified. He also led a study of thyroid nodules in children living downwind of nuclear testing sites in Nevada, traveling to southern Utah to do annual thyroid evaluations on children and teens exposed to radiation. His follow-up to that initial investigation became one of the longest running studies of thyroid disorders in children.

Dr. Rallison retired from the university in 2000, but his legacy continues here in Pediatrics; much of what he started—the inpatient teaching program, outpatient multidisciplinary clinic, family/patient education, diabetes camp, and outreach clinicsis still going strong.

For our current writing mentors:

We understand that circumstances and time constraints change over time, so we're asking that you let us know whether you're able to continue to serve as a mentor and, if so, what your current availability is by completing the short form below.

What Patients are Saying

Patient comments are submitted via the Qualtrics after-visit survey.

Meghan Candee, MD / Care Team - Neurology

"Exceptional care. We were listened to, taken seriously, didn't feel rushed, got detailed answers to all of our questions, and most importantly we were given a treatment plan that makes sense. We came from Idaho and it was well worth the six hour round trip drive. We got more answers in one afternoon at Primary's than we have at the multiple doctors we've seen here over the last two years. I love how engaged everyone was with my son making sure he was a big part of the conversation. "

Care Team Staff - Cardiology

"We love the staff here! No matter what time and who’s on shift we get the most excellent care every time. They always make my son have the best experience. Even tho he’s a little fussy, they are very patient and work so well with him and also me. We love coming here."

Debbie Durkee, NP - Rheumatology

"She is very in depth when explaining the conditions and the medications. We really feel like we are being listened to."

Corinne Espinoza, PhD - Adolescent Medicine

"Dr. Espinoza was amazing in talking with my child through sensitive topics."

Andrea McInerny, MD - Gastroenterology

"Andrea McInerny is a great doctor. She listens and is very easy for my daughter to talk to. She seems genuinely concerned about my daughter."

Derek Uchida, MD - Pulmonology

"We really loved talking to the Dr. He seems to care so much and realizes that we just want to get to the bottom of all this and get the care that we need for our son."
