NEAAO's Iftar Celebration

NEAAO's Iftar Celebration on April 29 at Portland Ocean Gateway was successful in drawing a diversity of guests together to experience Middle Eastern food, music, art and hospitality. The event also marked April as Arab American Heritage Month. Business leaders, community partners, friends and family enjoyed learning more about NEAAO's mission, and were enriched by performances by Chicago percussionist Karim Nagi, Maine Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, and a talk by local artist Kifah Abdulla.

NEAAO is grateful for the generous sponsorship of these businesses and organizations for our Iftar Celebration.

NEAAO Welcomes Afghan Families

NEAAO is one of several organizations awarded a national grant to work with Maine's new Afghan arrivals. We are especially looking forward to supporting women as they acclimate to their new home. We have lots of wonderful activities and learning opportunities planned. If you are interested in volunteering, email us. We have special need for women who speak Dari or Pashto.

Thanks to the generosity of people across the USA, over $5.6 million was donated to the Welcome.US Welcome Fund, in partnership with GoFundMe.org. We are grateful to have received a grant to continue our important work serving Afghan newcomers.

State of Maine recognizes April as Arab American Heritage Month

NEAAO was thrilled when the Maine Legislature adopted a joint resolution last month recognizing April as Arab American Heritage Month. This resolution highlights the many contributions of Arab Americans to Maine's economy and cultural life.

What's New: Tai Chi

Through a partnership with Southern Maine Agency on Aging, women in the NEAAO community will have the chance to learn Tai Chi. This gentle and contemplative form of movement is especially well suited for women ages 55 and over, and is suitable for all levels of fitness.  No special attire needed.

Generously sponsored by Northern Light Health and Good Shepherd Food Bank
