PIC Ponderings

I have just began a five-week online course entitled, “ Peacebuilding amid Polarization: A Leader's Toolkit for Constructive Engagement on the Israeli-Palestinian Crisis” as part of what I am "paying attention to". Given that this crisis is one among so many “polarizations” in our world, I hope to share some of my learnings and reflections with you in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, and because my own past few weeks have been a tad jammed up, my “PIC Ponderings” offering comes from a recent article offered by the Wellness Compass Staff (the group that provides our Advent and Lenten meditation booklets).

Please consider the following as we prepare for our (do-over) Annual Meeting this coming Sunday. What are WE paying attention to?

Blessings,

Rev. Lisa

Paying Attention

By Holly Hughes Stoner, Scott Stoner

(Wellness Compass Staff, permission granted to reprint)

People across the United States have been experiencing extreme winter weather lately. There have been tornadoes, heavy rains, bitter cold, ice storms, strong winds, and record snowstorms. We know this as we have been running Zoom Wellness Circles lately with people living through all of these different types of weather. We have people from VA, WI, NY, CA, NC, OR, FL, MD, and UT in one we are running now, and everyone is talking about the challenging weather they are experiencing this winter.

One group member shared the quote, "If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of snow." While this may seem a stretch if we are experiencing truly dangerous weather, we like the spirit of this quote. It fits with a quote that runs throughout our resources: "Whatever we pay attention to is what will grow."

If we give most of our attention to our complaints (weather or otherwise) our negative energy will grow. If we pay attention to what we are grateful for, to what brings us joy (including road crews, utility workers, first responders, and others who help restore services after a storm), that will grow as well.

Here are some other examples of paying attention and the results we can get:

If we pay attention and praise good behavior in a child, we will likely see more of that behavior.

If we pay attention to and appreciate someone's efforts to face a challenging situation, we may increase their self-confidence and commitment to keep working to overcome their challenge.

If we really pay attention to some habit we want to change, we will be more likely to make that change.

If we pay attention to the kindness of another, by expressing our gratitude and appreciation, we encourage more acts of kindness.

When we pay extra attention to someone we care about, we make them feel cared about, and we grow the relationship.

You can probably think of additional examples from your own life of how "What we pay attention to grows," and we encourage you to do so.

We also encourage you to test out the truth of this principle by making a concerted effort, in the days and weeks to come, to go out of your way, and to pay attention to something or someone in your life that you would like to enhance.

Give that part of your life more attention in the next few weeks and see what happens. Most likely, that area of your life will grow, no matter the weather.

Annual Meeting 2.0

All the prep was done for our Annual Meeting last Sunday. The annual reports written, collated and printed. The food tables overflowing and work tables all set up with supplies.

Then, a lot of us thought better of driving to church because we woke up something like this.....

Although we "had a quorum" (our by-laws allow for a very small number to vote on business items), the intended hope for our gathering is to bring as many voices to the table as possible.

So, we'll try again THIS Sunday - Feb. 4

Please consider bringing some simple food to share (i.e. sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fruit plate).

If anyone has leftovers from last week that they took home

to freeze - unthaw and bring!

A Digital Copy of the Annual Report can be downloaded HERE

Click HERE for the Slate of Nominees for Wardens, Vestry, and Diocesan Convention Delegates. Please note that this Slate has been revised and one three-year term for Vestry remains vacant (nominations from the floor on Sunday are encouraged)

Please note that the above download includes the CORRECT 2023 Newsletter and Email Communications Report. The pervious downloads and the already printed hard copies unintentionally included the 2022 report instead!

What Else Is Happening?

Lenten Study Group Explores Our Baptismal Promises

For our Lenten study this year we will be taking a close look at our baptismal promises - with the aid of the book 'Will You? A Lenten Study of Baptismal Promises'

The book is published by Forward Movement, the Episcopal organization which publishes 'Forward Day by Day' and encourages daily prayer and study.

We will meet every Sunday during Lent except for Feb. 25, when Bishop Laura will be visiting. The sessions, the first of which will be Feb. 18, will run from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m..

There is a suggested donation of $8 to be made directly to St. John's to cover the cost of materials, but please don't let finances prevent you from attending.

If you would like to join us, or have questions, please contact Naomi Fisher, Emily Harvey or Herb St. Jean. It would be very helpful if those who know they are interested contact us and let us know, as the books do need to be ordered ahead of time and we need an approximate count.

The program is not limited to St. John's parishioners, so please bring a friend if you'd like.

The read more about the program click here.

Bishop Ahrens to Visit Feb. 25

Bishop Laura Ahrens will be joining us for worship at St. John's on Sunday, Feb. 25, and we're hoping to make it a memorable day.

In her note reminding us about the visit, Bishop Laura said, "I am eager to spend time with you so that we might discern together how it is God is calling us deeper in relationship and shared ministry."

By "discern", please know that Bishop Laura is interested in hearing our questions. She is working with small churches throughout the diocese (particularly those with part-time clergy, or no clergy at all) and enjoys sharing common concerns as well as best practices.

She will celebrate and preach at the 10:00 a.m. service, gather with us for conversation during Coffee Hour for about 20 minutes, and then meet with our vestry. Please help us make this a true celebration of our life together.

In what ways might YOU help US share "who we are now"?

NOTE: our Godly Play children will meet in their Sunday School class and then join us at The PEACE, as usual. Our 'tweens and teens already are being encouraged to take a role in the service (prelude music, singing, reading, acolyting). Bishop Laura will offer a brief "Children's/Youth Homily" at the end of the service, hoping to engage all young at heart in a conversation.

This is an important and very celebratory time in our life together. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining the fun.

In Case You Missed It!

Two folks we know rather well were spotlighted in the media recently. We call your attention to these items in case you missed them.

A couple of weeks ago, 'CBS Sunday Morning' did a lengthy (for TV anyway) piece on Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop.

There are five such bishops now - whom the now-retired Bishop Robinson refers to as 'his legacy.'

Among them is Jeff Mello, the 16th Bishop Diocesan of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut.

"Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel talked with Bishop Robinson, Bishop Mello and Bishops Mary Glasspool of New York and Thomas Brown of Maine about their journeys.

You can see the full segment here.

" I retired from parish ministry for family reasons, and I do miss doing the liturgy on a regular basis with that group of people. The great blessing to me of parish ministry is that you’re invited into the lives of people, their highest highs and their lowest lows, and trusted with their companionship on their way." - Jack Gilpin

A person even more familiar to many of us at St. John's, our former priest Jack Gilpin, was featured in a recent Episcopal News Service story.

Lots of us, thanks mostly to Facebook, have seen the story of Jack, his dual career and his hit HBO show. But if you haven't read it yet, we've reproduced it. Just click this link.

A PRAYER FOR THE RESTORATION OF PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND

God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Israel and Palestine. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all who are struggling with grief and fear, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war and peace. May wisdom, discernment and compassion guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children around the world, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen
