We kindly ask that you:
- Stay home if you are not feeling well
- Remain masked and physically distanced when in the building. Rather than a cloth mask, we encourage you to wear an N95/KN95 or surgical mask.
As per our new Covid policy, there will be unvaccinated congregants in the building. As a reminder, there will be dedicated "fully-vaccinated only" spaces in our prayer services and during Kiddush.

Temple Emanu-El continues to make safety and security a top priority. Our overall security plan includes, but is not limited to, restricted access to the building at all times and armed security. Most recently, we installed emergency panic alarm buttons throughout the building as well as an emergency public address system. We hope that our safety measures bring everyone a measure of comfort and confidence. |

Baking For A Cause
Cookies, brownies or bars are needed that will be added as dessert to over 200 bagged lunches given out weekly by either McAuley House or Help the Homeless, RI.
Please make a double batch of your favorite cookie/brownie or bar. Put a generous portion (2-3 cookies depending on the size) into a snack or sandwich sized bag and deliver them to either Paula Goldberg 47 Paine Ave. Cranston, RI or Barbara Dwares 46 Balsam Court Cranston RI. Call Paula 941-2042 or Barbara 474-8276 with any questions.

What Happened to Our Parking Lot Guests?
One Year Later
Last summer Temple Emanu-El (TE) and the Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island (JCDSRI) hosted in our parking lot a family experiencing two years of homelessness and living in their car. The family, a mom and her daughter, like most everyone with no home and living in a vehicle, were constantly shooed away wherever they tried to park day or night. Exhausted and dispirited they had nowhere to go.
So TE and JCDSRI agreed to create for them a safe parking spot for the 2021 summer in the Taft Avenue lot.
As members of our community saw up close the family’s plight and witnessed how homelessness is not caused by the the individual’s characteristics but by systems issues, many of you stepped forth with substantial help. Extremely generous donors gave funds to pay for a porta john and for a few nights in a motel so the family could shower and get out of dangerous weather. Others donated week after week of life sustaining supplies, such as a tent for shade, sleeping bags, wipes, toilet paper, ice and ice chests, water, food, gift cards for gas and groceries, temporary foster care for their cat, and friendly visits to the parking lot just to say hi and check in with mom and daughter to see how they were doing.
Many times last summer the mom and daughter cried with me as they expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of generosity and gentle attention that TE and JCDSRI members showed them. “We’ve never been cared for like this,” they said over and over again. They've known being spat at, shooed away, scorned, blamed for their plight. Being treated as human beings with legitimate needs touched their hearts and souls.
While TE and JCDSRI did our thing, superb case managers from the House of Hope and from Outreach RI continued their work with the family, connecting them as much as possible with the fragmented, underfunded, slow moving patchwork of programs and services available.
I am happy to report that after a protracted journey through a byzantine labyrinth of bureaucracy, filled with many stumbling blocks and dead ends, mom and daughter are now in newly constructed subsidized safe, stable housing.
Today well over a thousand Rhode Islanders are unhoused, living outdoors. More people than ever are sleeping on our sidewalks. Winter is coming again.
Simply put, the cause of homelessness in RI and across the US is the lack of affordable housing, caused by laws, policies and market forces that have made it extremely difficult to construct affordable housing. RI’s emergency shelters are full with long nightly waiting lists. The solution to homelessness is policy change.
