Rev. Don Everts

Matthew 6:16-18

Sunday Morning Classes at 9:45 am

Follow Me | This video series from Andy Stanley explores Jesus’ invitation to follow him on a transformational journey through the gospels. This class is hosted by the 49rs in Room 115.

Book of James | This practical book says what we believe is demonstrated by how we live. In this 8 week lesson Bible study, we will engage with the challenging concept that knowing about the God of the Bible is not the same as knowing the God of the Bible. Knowing God results in a changed life – a life with real wisdom. This class is hosted by Little Bacon in Room 020.

Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at the Table | This video series by Louis Giglio unpacks Psalm 23 to offer insight into how to overcome the enemy's lies and peace and spiritual security in any circumstance or situation. This class is hosted by March Fellowship in Room 015.

** Church History & Us: What can we learn from Ignatius Loyola? | As a church that values historic confessions, we are naturally curious about Christians throughout the ages. For three weeks, Rev. Don Everts will be teaching about a Spaniard from the 16th Century who started life as a vain and loose man, but went on to become profoundly devoted to Jesus. We'll learn about his conversion experience, the "spiritual exercises" he practiced, and the principles that guided him and his fellow missionaries (the Jesuits) on their global exploits. Each week we'll learn from history, study the Bible, and ask questions about our own lives. This class is hosted by McClung in Room 026.

** denotes a new class happening this Sunday!

Single Service Sunday - May 5th!

To help our entire congregation deepen our journey through the Sermon on the Mount, we will be holding a single worship service on May 5th to experience all together an original masterwork composed by Faith Zimmer and inspired by the Beatitudes. This single service will be held at 11:00 AM on May 5th - mark your calendars and prepare your hearts!

There will be an All-Church Potluck Lunch with a Cinco de Mayo theme at 12:15 immediately following the combined morning services. No RSVP is necessary. Please bring salads, snacks, or finger foods to share. No plug-ins please for simplicity. Drinks, dessert, and PINATA provided! Let's connect and have fun!

We praise God that early givers to the campaign have committed over $4.2 million to help secure the enduring legacy of God's ministry through this church! Wow! (And this was before our 3 exciting desserts!) We'll keep you updated as new commitments come in, but in the meantime check out more about this strategic new initiative at firstandcalvary.org/legacy.

Each spring, First & Calvary celebrates high school and college graduates in a special service. This year, Graduate Sunday will take place on April 28th during the 11:00 am service. A special lunch will be served to the graduates and their families following the service at 12:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

If you have family members graduating from high school, college, or graduate school, we would be honored to recognize them during the service. To RSVP, simply click on the link provided HERE by April 22nd. Additionally, please send a current picture such as a graduation photo or baby picture to t.clayton@firstandcalvary.org.

PASTOR'S BOOK CLUB

For those interested in exploring the intersection of faith and vocation, Pastor Don invites you to read and discuss Timothy Keller's Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God's Work. Grab a copy and start reading! The book discussion for Keller's book will occur in the library on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 pm.

Tyler Heckman announces a second Psalm Sing on May 1st, May 8th, and May 15th from 6:15 pm to 6:45 pm in the Chapel. No experience necessary! The singing style used in the Psalm Sing is easy for anyone to pick up, and it's a fresh way to experience God through prayer. This time, it will be led by a dynamic combo of piano, guitar, and autoharp. Let us know if you have any requests for Psalms (email t.heckman@firstandcalvary.org) and we will try to work them into the plans!

MEET F&C SCHOLAR ADDISON COLLINS

Addison Collins is First & Calvary's soprano choral scholar. Addison is a sophomore at Missouri State University studying vocal performance. However, pursuing music professionally was not always her plan.

Until sophomore year of high school, Addison planned to have a career as a ballet dancer. She had been in choirs since middle school, but says, "I didn't take them seriously because I was going to dance." However, something shifted Addison's plans, and going into her junior year of high school she began to train her voice. Now in her second year of college, she says, "I continue to fall in love with the art form."

Addison says her career goals are "ever-changing, as I learn what I want to do and my passions," but she would love to work in a professional choir, possibly as the soprano soloist.

As part of the MSU chorale, Addison has had the opportunity to sing in France and Korea and will go to Argentina and Chile this summer. While performing in other countries, Addison observed the universal language of music. Commenting on the Korea trip, she says, "We sang in English, we sang in different languages that weren't Korean, and people were still weeping and very moved by the music, including myself."

Something else she wants to integrate into her plan is working with kids with special needs. Addison's brother has autism, and she has seen the power of music translate to his life and help with communication: "It really is just a universal language. I saw that in Korea, and I saw that with my brother, too....It's really cool to see how music translates with people."

The integration of faith and art is important to Addison. Not only is faith "an extremely large part" of how she approaches art and music, but it also helps her view music as a gift and not a self-proclaiming art, as vocal performance sometimes is.

First & Calvary helps with that expression of faith in art for Addison, too. Speaking about the congregation, she says, "They're really dedicated to worshiping the Lord in whatever they do."

DO YOU HAVE ROOM FOR ONE MORE?

Grocery shopping can be such a lonely chore. Have you ever wished that you could have company while you were shopping for groceries? Well, you are in luck. Campus Ministry is looking for people who would be willing to bring a student along with them on their weekly run to the grocery store. They have lots of students without a car who live in apartments and could use a grocery buddy. Is that you? Contact Wendy Everts at w.everts@firstandcalvary.org.
