Swim time: New Milpitas HS Aquatics Center agreement makes way for community swim |
Providing community access to the Aquatics Center at Milpitas High School was secured with a new one-year lease agreement with Milpitas Aquatic Club. The Board of Education unanimously approved the pact at the May 25 meeting.
With Business Services Manager Kelly Ng leading the district's efforts, Milpitas Aquatic Club agreed to provide community access to the pool during the summer, as well as lifeguards during athletic practices, home games, and swim PE classes. Summer recreational swim is scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
"It's our goal to help grow and improve aquatics in the Milpitas area by offering a fun, safe and competitive program in swimming, diving, and water polo," said Kyler Van Swol, head coach of Milpitas Aquatic Club.
The district solicited community input through a multilingual survey, which garnered nearly 600 responses. Eighty-eight percent of respondents said they would use the pool for a nominal fee.
The new one-year lease agreement will run from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Review the full board presentation here.

Randall World Languages School outlines
3-year plan to add third language

Randall Elementary Co-Principal Kristan Prolo shared a plan for the next three years that will help determine the third language and its implementation in the World Languages School model by the 2023-24 school year.
The Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade World Languages program, which will use an 80-10-10 model, will be available to all student residents within Milpitas Unified School District.
"I truly believe that Milpitas, as an innovator in education, will be a model for this type of program," Prolo said. "This fits with the type of global learners that we are creating."
Randall currently is a dual immersion school with Spanish and English, and as envisioned by the Board and Superintendent, will become a school of three languages in the near future. The third language is yet to be determined, but the goal is for students to be fully biliterate in Spanish and English, and have the ability to converse and have basic literacy in the third language.

Chang-Lin (Johnny) Tsai and Xinyi Zhu, G. Chris Andrade and Gillian DeGuzman, Emma Kurcina and Fion Wong, Anuj Rajesh, Rishita Rokariya, Tanish Katkar and Joel Verakukalaparmbil, and Khang Nguyen were honored by the Board and District Leadership for their accolades in the 2021 design challenge.

Milpitas HS Social Media Library Team introduces new podcast and video readings |

The Milpitas HS Library Social Media Team, organized by Librarian Joy Kim, introduced their new podcast and video readings project to the Board and community at the May 25 meeting. Milpitas HS students Siya Arora, Kaitlyn Nguyen, Tanisha Varma and Angela Lee shared the details.
The team’s work can all be viewed now on their new Google site, titled The Learning Place. The MHS Library Social Media Team’s mission is "connecting Trojans, building community, and promoting awareness." For the first podcast, the team interviewed seniors who started their own businesses during these challenging times.

L&D Team leads Expanded Learning Opportunity Plan, LCAP study session |

The LCAP is a district plan; a living document to set goals, plan actions, and leverage resources to improve student outcomes. The 8 Priorities are: Basic Services, Implementation of State Standards; Parental Involvement; Pupil Achievement; Pupil Engagement; School Climate: Course Access; and Other Pupil Outcomes.
The district's LCAP Advisory Committee met regularly to work on the plan, and team members attended training sessions at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Additionally, 18 engagement sessions were held with multiple
stakeholders, including DELAC, CBAC, and SELPA, from September through May, along with surveys sent to staff and families.
The funds received through the ELO Grant must be utilized for programs and opportunities that serve any of the following: Low-income students; English Learners; Foster youth; Homeless students; Students with disabilities; and Students who perform below grade level.
In MUSD, the ELO Grant funds will be used for expanded summer school opportunities (Summer 2021), increase intervention for struggling students, address social-emotional needs, expand credit recovery opportunities, provide professional development and parent education.

The 10-year initiative seeks to increase the local Milpitas employment rate for high wage jobs beyond 25%, support Milpitas business community, and provide MUSD learners, parents and residents with global skills in driving the future of work. It will provide 75 Founding Member Organizations (FMO) unique opportunities to invest in their organization’s stability, present and future local workforce, and local economic prosperity.
Membership is an opportunity to establish a mutually beneficial understanding and collaborative working relationship between the entities that drive the Milpitas economy, MUSD and its strategic partners. At the May 11 meeting, Superintendent Cheryl Jordan announced a 3-year, $750,000 partnership with KLA, establishing the firm as one of the FMOs.
