"Beyond the Game" Player of the Month
From Richmond to the Huacahuasi Village in Peru, Natalie Koehn-Wu, a U16 Mystx Classic player, fully embraces what it means to go Beyond the Game. Over the past two years, Natalie and her sister have developed and continue to organize a foundation, called SistersProjectPeru. Their goal is to build a medical clinic for the Huacahuasi community, located in the Sacred Valley within the Andes Mountains. With the help of many fundraising events, including hosting a Covid friendly “juggle-a-thon,” the sister duo have been able to begin the prepwork for the project. Combined with Natalie’s love for Spanish and interest in the medical field, “every bit of progress is very exciting to [her].”
After the sisters' first visit to Peru on a family trip, they realized the difference they could make in the Huacahuasi community. Although the Peruvian government has strived to make vast improvements in the accessibility to medicine, one-third of their population goes without basic healthcare. As a result, Natalie and her sister were inspired to create a way to help Peru, while also aligning with their own personal goals. Throughout the past two years, Natalie has been able to form close bonds with the Huacahuasi community leaders; they are “some of my favorite people ever,” said Natalie. In the future, the aspiring activist hopes to expand SistersProjectPeru into other parts of Peru, while also leading her FC Richmond community to go Beyond the Game
