Auction Wrap Up!
by: Auction Committee
|
Auction 2022 was an especially exciting event as we had a 2-year absence due to Covid. I'm sure some people couldn't come yet, but we are very glad we did the event! It takes legions of volunteers to pull it off, but April 24th, pull it off, we did!! The hotel facility, at the Springhill Suites by Marriott at 43 Newbury Street, Peabody, MA, was excellent, and the staff was very friendly and willing to accommodate our needs.
Our volunteers rose to the occasion, doing a tremendous job. We were able to load and transport all our items to the hotel on Saturday evening, so set up could begin early Sunday morning. Most stayed all day, also helping to clean and pack up!
We had door prizes: a 50/50 raffle, a food table and sales table, along with the silent and live auctions. Lauralee D. and Jim H. shared the load this year in getting us all to bid and spend "just $5 more" and reminding and reminding us "it's all for the dogs!”
Our president, Tina R., welcomed everyone and emphasized the importance of this fundraiser was to provide the best care for our dogs! A two-year absence from being able to get together allowed us to see people again! Fred D. came from South Dakota and Danny T., from Florida. Many "veteran” volunteers from the New England States and NY were there to help and bid high and often. We had a lot of supporters who donated items, came to help, or supported us in other ways to make this day a success.
During the break, we got to see our dogs: Tova #481 is now 12 years young. She's a certified therapy dog and has really mellowed from her reactive days! Elsa #510, now 8 years old, was there, and her owner shared her story of EPI. Elsa is strong and healthy as long as she gets her enzymes. Promise #512, now 4 years old, used to be so afraid and reactive to people and animals alike, but through patience and training, she can now walk with people and is a non-reactive evaluation team member! Guinness, GSRNE foster, was there and enjoyed the socialization! Pax, a newly rescued Jack Russell, popped in to say "Hello".
Registration was hectic at check-in and check-out, but Tomas, Sam and Chris kept things running smoothly. Our 50/50 raffle sold a lot of tickets, and Remy was busy counting tickets for everyone! Our sales table was hopping with our jackets, shirts, cards, cookbooks and lots of goodies to sell; Tina and Paula and their team were kept very busy! We all worked up an appetite, and thanks to our food table, we were well satisfied, buying a lot of delicious sandwiches, chips, drinks, noodles and yummy desserts. All food was individually wrapped, keeping our safety in mind! Carol and Mark, and Kathy, kept that humming. The silent auctions did well too, offering more items than ever before!
Thank you to MANY individuals who donated and participated in lots of ways to make this such a success! Behind the scenes, Briana and Tomas worked their magic to input all the items from the tagging party and make our auction catalog.
Hours of work and time went into the success of our auction... beginning months in advance with Annette and others soliciting donations. It all came to a conclusion yesterday. We raised over $9000 gross which is a super job in these uncertain times! Soon we will start working on next year!!
Sincere thanks also to the many, many volunteers who worked so hard!!

Happy Tails: Sasha
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Sasha (GSRNE #497) was adopted by Don and Christine in 2018 when she was almost two years old. Christine tells us she is doing really well. She is great around people – everyone that she meets loves her. She is still a little dog-reactive on leash but has a couple of neighbor dogs she will play with – Milo, a yellow lab, and Stella, a mix, will each visit and Sasha is a good host, playing nicely with them for the most part. Sasha likes to play tug with stuffed toys, and she also chews them up. Once they are torn up, they become outside toys. She has quite a collection outside (Lamby is one of her favorites), and when she is outside she keeps track of them. She doesn’t play much fetch, but does enjoy two walks a day with Christine and Don.
|
Her favorite human in the family seems to be their son, Michael. Sasha first came to Don and Christine as a foster dog, and they were planning to let her be adopted. However, while she was in their home she became totally attached to Michael and he to her, so they decided to adopt Sasha themselves. Sasha follows Michael around, sleeps in his room, and in general hangs out with him all day. She likes nothing more than to be around her people and really is a part of their family.

Take Me Home: Lexi
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Lexi is a beautiful 4-year-old bicolor female who is easy to have around the house. She is well-behaved and comfortable when left alone in the home for a few hours, and welcomes you back home with a happy wagging tail.
Lexi loves to play fetch and enjoys her daily walks with her foster Mom. She will delicately nose through her box of toys to find just the right one, then will prance around with the toy trying to entice you to chase her. She’s a sweet girl who likes to be active, but easily settles down for quiet time.
|
Lexi also is a special girl, who will need a family that is careful to maintain her health. Lexi has a condition called pannus that was not treated regularly, which has resulted in her vision being impaired. This causes her to be uncertain about stairs, but she does go up and down with her foster Mom. Please take a look at the video on her page; you will see that Lexi can run and play like any other dog. She is getting her eye drops daily now, and therefore she should maintain the vision she currently has.
With her sweet nature and playful personality, Lexi will make someone a very nice companion. Could she be the newest addition to your family?

Volunteer Spotlight: Loueen L.
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Name & Hometown: Loueen L, Shirley, Mass.
How long have you been a GSRNE volunteer?
Since January 2006. The first photoshoot I did for GSRNE was Lexis, GSRNE #185.
What do you do for GSRNE? What does the job entail? How many hours per week/month?
My primary job is photography coordinator. I either take photos of foster dogs ready to post for adoption, or work with other team members who take them.
In addition, I am the Smugmug administrator, where we store and share photos of our dogs; I post dogs for adoption on our website and the other websites we use; I also have been active in fundraising by creating and sourcing masks and greeting cards.
My husband and I have done a lot of jobs through the years. The most important job we've done is fostering. We have been an active foster home since 2008, and have had the pleasure of helping many wonderful dogs along their way. We also have been foster support for other foster homes and have done transport, evaluations and home visits for potential foster homes and adopters. The most important, rewarding and educational part of volunteering for GSRNE to us has been fostering.
I spend about 10-15 hours a month on my photography-related responsibilities.
|
How did you get interested in GSRNE?
I got my first GSD in 1978, and fell in love with the breed. After I became interested in photography, I thought I could use that hobby and what I had learned to help these wonderful dogs find homes by taking photos that would grab a potential adopter's attention.
What is it about the organization that interests you?
I enjoy being a hands-on volunteer, and meeting and interacting with the dogs and the people who foster them. I enjoy photography, and using the photos to create fundraising items is a great creative outlet, which also helps raise needed funds to care for the foster dogs. It's also great to work with other volunteers who share the same interest and goals.
Do you have a GSRNE dog? If so, who is it, and how long have you had them?
Yes, we have two GSRNE dogs. Ava, GSRNE #437, has been with us for 7 years; and Koda, GSRNE #604, has been with us 1.5 years.
What would you say to prospective volunteers?
Find that special skill or interest you enjoy, which will help the GSRNE mission. Or, just pitch in where you can. All are welcome!

Foster Dogs
Thank you to so many of you for helping our foster dogs by sending us several of our requested supplies on our Wish List.
Most items provided to our foster homes for the dogs' care and training are generous donations from people like you. There are many items on the list that we need, but currently, we especially need toys for our foster dogs.
Our Wish List has a link that will bring you to our continuously updated list of items that you can order through Amazon.com. We have now updated the list to show which items we need more by being listed first and/or showing the priority level.

Foster Homes Needed!!
If you love the breed and want to help, consider fostering. GSRNE pays all the expenses. You provide the love and care. We receive several hundred calls for help every year from Shelters and Owners looking to place a dog with GSRNE. We cannot help them all, but we need Foster Homes to help those that we can. Some of our Foster Homes become so attached to their Foster Dog that they become the dog's Forever Home. We love every happy ending, but that also means we need a new Foster Home for the next dog in need. To learn more about fostering, please visit www.gsrne.org/foster/
When you look at the wonderful dogs available for adoption, and you read the Happy Tails in our Newsletter and online, remember that GSRNE was able to help these dogs because of our Foster Homes.
Fostering Basics
A fence is required. Dogs are at the greatest risk of escape when they are first introduced to a new location. Children living in the home need to be age 10 or older.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the foster home do?
You provide a safe and stable environment for the foster dog until he or she finds a forever home. You take care of your foster dog like you would your own dog - play, exercise, grooming and basic manners training. You also provide periodic reports to GSRNE about the dog's progress, personality, likes & dislikes so that GSRNE can find the right match for him or her.
2. How do I know if the foster dog will be a good fit for me and my family?
We work with you to determine what general type of dog will adapt to your household for a successful fostering experience for you & the rescue dog. We also provide strong support for you & help is only a phone call away.
3. How much does it cost to foster a GSD for GSRNE?
There is no cost to the foster home. GSRNE reimburses you for the foster dog's food and pays for all authorized vet care. In addition, GSRNE loans you a crate, feeding and water dishes, bedding, brushes, collars, leashes, & of course, toys!
