Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Switches

Eastbound and Westbound I-10

Construction Activity and Closures

  • A nighttime single lane closure of eastbound I-10 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 from 7 p.m. - 5 a.m. The eastbound I-10 outside lane approaching the Cactus City Rest Area will be closed as crews restripe the rest area on- and off-ramps. Please remember to reduce your traveling speed when driving through our project area, follow all temporary traffic signs, and plan your route ahead of travel using Caltrans' QuickMap.

  • Starting the week of April 15, nightly eastbound and westbound single lane and alternating lane closures are scheduled Monday - Thursday. Nighttime crews will be moving k-rail, continuing concrete paving, performing bridge widening operations, and preparing for traffic switches targeted for late-April.

Upcoming Traffic Switches

  • Scheduled for late-April 2024, two separate traffic switches will be performed along eastbound and westbound I-10. The first traffic switch will include switching existing eastbound traffic onto newly paved and restriped I-10 lanes. The second will include switching westbound traffic onto eastbound lanes, via a "crossover" and newly paved detour. This will allow crews to safely access new portions of the project while keeping motorists and crews safe. Stay tuned for more details!

Safety Reminder

Festival Season is Here! Safe driving during the 2024 Coachella Valley festival season requires heightened awareness and caution due to increased traffic and potential distractions. All motorists should anticipate heavy congestion on highways and local roads near all festival grounds and allow for extra travel time. It is essential to adhere to speed limits, avoid distracted driving behaviors such as texting or using cell phones, and remain vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists. Designating a sober driver or utilizing rideshare services can also help prevent accidents and increase safety for one of the best times of the year!

Project Background

The I-10 Desert Rehab Project segment is a 13-mile stretch of the I-10 freeway near Coachella in Riverside County, between 1.8 miles east of the Dillon Road Interchange and 2 miles east of the Cactus City Rest Area. Construction will take place over the next 3.5 years and includes repaving I-10, updating lane striping, and the addition of an eastbound truck climbing lane. The Cactus City Rest Area will also be closed for 1-2 months during construction.

In addition to repairing and restoring existing roadway pavement and adding an eastbound truck climbing lane, the I-10 Desert Rehab Project will install electric vehicle charging stations at the Cactus City Rest Area, replace and upgrade bridge railings, guardrail systems, and roadway signage, and improve roadway infrastructure including drainage and stormwater treatment systems.
