This Sunday
Faith in the City

On Sunday, May 2, we are excited to welcome John Hope Bryant for a discussion about race, equity, and economics. John Hope Bryant is founder and chief executive officer of Operation HOPE, Inc. the largest not-for-profit provider of financial literacy, financial inclusion and economic empowerment tools and services in the United States for youth and adults.

Dear saints,

This Sunday is the final of this program year’s Faith in the City series when Natosha Reid Rice and I will be joined by John Hope Bryant to talk about race, equity and economics.

Mr. Bryant is founder and chief executive of Operation HOPE, the largest not-for-profit provider of financial literacy, financial inclusion and economic empowerment tools and services in the United States. He is a remarkable leader both locally and nationally, and it is exciting to be able to end our series with him as our guest speaker.

Through the course of this year, the Faith in the City series has enabled us to be enriched by an incredible array of thought leaders in our midst — Robert Franklin, Sally Yates, Pearl Cleage, Camara Phyllis Jones, Beverly Tatum, Bob Lupton, and John Hope Bryant — drawing the connection between our faith and this city. We have explored major themes of our local and national life, including justice, health, education, neighborhood development, and the arts.

Personally, it has been a privilege to learn from these leaders and I pray that the intersection of your faith and life in this city will deepen as we continue to embark on this kind of formative learning together. All of our conversations are available on our website should you wish to see them.

With thanksgiving for your faith in this city,
Simon Mainwaring

Few things affect our lives more than the global economy. Food, medicine, travel, education, and global wellbeing all depend on the ways individuals, companies, and governments spend money. Join Hank Harris and friends as they explore three complex case studies: gene editing, the Major League Baseball All Star game, and the infrastructure bill being debated in Congress.

Exploring Western Mysticism with Simeon Bruce

Sundays, May 9, 16, 23, 9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom

One unifying claim within Western Mysticism is that some knowledge is inaccessible to the intellect, and that we can learn truths about ourselves and about God through contemplation, the emotions, and sensory experiences like gazing upon icons, listening to music, or being in nature. This claim does not discredit enlightenment ideas like reason, logic, and evidence, but acknowledges that some truths are discovered in different ways.

In this brief series, Simeon Bruce will lead us through a discussion of three different women in the mystical tradition of the West: Margery Kempe, Thérèse of Lisieux, and Hildegard von Bingen. In the company of these women, we will come to appreciate the diverse roads to union with God that they have mapped out for us.

Science and Faith: An Exploration with Dr. Ian MacFarland

Sundays, May 9, 16, 23, 9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom

The relationship between science and Christian faith shapes public policy on matters ranging from writing high school science textbooks to interpreting arctic sea ice melt. This course will provide suggestions about how Christians can orient themselves to these discussions by exploring what the confession of God as Creator tells us about the world and our place in it, and what implications this has for how we receive and evaluate the claims of science.
