Next Steps For Noble Neighborhood
Since the June 21st council decision, our office has been prepping many actions that are ready to be deployed with the resumption of City Council meetings in August.
Today I submitted a memo with specific recommendations for the August 3rd Rules Committee meeting intended to hold the City Council accountable for the impact the June 21st council direction has had on our community. The loss of trust and continued dissatisfaction with the City’s efforts to end street homelessness cannot continue if we are serious about improving the quality of life for all our residents.
Our memo specifies:
1. The City Council meet again in November to enable the public to share their feedback on proposed sites including alternative sites that have been submitted for evaluation.
2. The Noble site is not near a park, it is a park, so pause all planning, design and construction activity for the Noble EIHC site until the legitimacy of using a city park for an EIHC site, along with several other issues are resolved.
3. Remove arbitrary, internal deadlines that limit staff’s ability to perform the necessary work to identify a practical alternative EIHC site in District 4
4. Prioritize all underutilized spaces for potential EIHC site not just the city-owned sites.
5. All alternative sites for D4 are completely vetted and the council office and community has the opportunity to understand the explanation of feasibility, viability and practicality.
Tomorrow, Friday, July 29th from 4:15 – 5:15PM, I will be hosting my own community meeting at the Berryessa Library Community Room where I will be sharing more details about the work we have been doing to stop the development at the Noble site and the support I need from our community to ensure we prevail.
Just like we did with the Orchard neighborhood to stop the Charcot Overpass project, together with the Noble neighborhood we can save our precious park.

Collaborating with the Community - Notting Hill
Over the course of several weeks, City cleaning crews have been removing debris and encampment materials from the area of Coyote Creek adjacent to the Notting Hill neighborhood. Several tons of material have been removed thus far with much more clean up to follow.
This clean up is the culmination of many months of collaboration between my office and the community to address issues of blight, illegal dumping, and safety. I'm excited to see the progress we've made and I look forward to continuing the work we're doing together. Below is a timeline of events and activities.
Many community groups have not formally become neighborhood associations and we understand that establishing such an organization can be both time consuming and difficult. That being said, I would be happy to come to any meetings your neighborhood might already be having. Please reach out to my office at District4@sanjoseca.gov if you're interested in having me attend your meeting or gathering.
In Person Office Hours a Success
After so much time social distancing and isolating, it was refreshing to meet face to face with my community at a newly opened local business right in the heart of District 4! Last night at Pho San Jose, my neighbors and I discussed everything from street sweeping to tree planting. The input we received was invaluable and those who attended gave my staff and I helpful suggestions. The pho was also top notch!
Connecting in person with the people I represent at City Hall is my favorite part of this job. Thank you to everyone who came out. Be sure to keep your eyes on my website and sign up for the community newsletter to receive updates on our next event.
