Bight and the surrounding water system and are concerned with the present and future state of these fisheries. Greetings HRFA Members and Friends,
I hope that as of this writing, we find you all well and safe and enjoying the fishing opportunities of the pre-
COVID-19 Pandemic. The Fall fishing challenges and rewards are just ahead.
Our Annual Awards and fundraising dinner took place on Sunday, 17th October 2021. We enjoyed a great meal in
the company of our members that we have not met in a long time. Very appropriately we dined on the shores of the
scenic Hudson River at the upper level of the Cornetta’s restaurant.

I would like to thank all members that attended and the volunteers. Special thanks and congratulations to Dan Harrison, the chairman of the event and his family for another successful event. Our special guest and MC Steve Liesman, entertained members with his witty, personal, fishing experiences and emphasized the importance of sustaining a healthy Striped Bass population and how his Save a Million Bass project can help.
We were also entertained by Noah Sardinas with his latest memorable fishing experience. Congratulations to Noah for the winning the HRFA Photo Contest, that was chaired by Miguel Sardinas. Congratulations also to both Friends of the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association Awardees: 2020 Chris Letts and 2021 Paul Gallay. Next, Scott Havner, HRFA Fishing Contest co-chair announced the 2020 winners (prizes were sent out already).
The high point of the evening was the recognition of Joe Albanese’s contribution to the HRFA, by awarding him with the well-deserved Pete Barrett Award. Scott Havner, the 2020 awardee presented the award. Among Joe’s fishing activities, he is serving as the HRFA vice president, (my right hand) seeking, and engaging the monthly speakers and his relentless work on the HRFA, River Views, newsletter and reaching out to all HRFA subscribers. Congratulations Joe Albanese and keep up the good work.
From our last board meeting, I would like to bring to your attention a few items. The good news is that Outdoors/Sportsmen Shows are returning in 2022. We are looking for volunteer(s) to chair these events:
- January 6-9 . . . The Garden State Outdoor Sports Show at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison, NJ
- March 3-6 . . . The World fishing and Outdoor Expo at Rockland Community College in Suffern, NY.
We are planning to initiate Fishing Clinics as part of the Youth Angler Program, to be held once or twice per month. Please look for the scheduling for when you can participate.
The General meetings are being held, at the Elks Lodge. The last meeting was well attended, even though the scheduled speaker was unable to attend. Instead, we shared valuable fishing experiences.
The HRFA's month-long “Pan Fish” derby, organized by the newest EBoard Member, Alex Spindelman, using the mobile App “FishDonkey” is finished. Read the results below.

Hurricane IDA caused considerable damage on the lower Hudson riverfront. So, we are postponing the “Family” event that was to be held near the Hudson (PIP) combined with a “Care for the environment” activity.
We are still faced with challenges to our programming because of the COVID-19 pandemic, conditions. Nevertheless, our organization continues to function successfully, thanks to our dedicated members. I would like to take this opportunity the express my sincere appreciation. Also, I would like to remind those members, especially the recipients of the HRFA prestigious “Pete Barrett” award, that is expect from them to continue their efforts and contribution, to the best of their abilities. We are charitable organization, we provide our services to many, and we expect our members to participate and support us, accordingly.
As always, we thank you for your help and appreciate your donations.

On October 9th, a group of HRFA members met up at the Chart House Pier to cast a line and see if they could catch a few stripers. October is an excellent month to target stripers along the lower Hudson, with bunker and sea worms the preferred bait to use, but on this outing, we had neither. The local tackle shop was all out of bait. Members had shrimp and clams as the following best baits.
Unfortunately, on this date, no HRFA members hooked into a fish. But that did not stop
members from having a good time; hearing fishing stories, sharing tactics and just being
outdoors casting baited hooks into the Hudson still counts as a great outing.
If you have never fished off the pier, the time is now to land that big bass you've been after all season; bring at minimum a nine-foot rod rigged with a fish finder rig, big bunker chunks, and a bridge net if you want to give the Chart House a try.

Name that Tarpon Contest Winner |
Jeanne Ross (who, BTW, worked years ago with Serg Radossi to start our annual "Hooked on the Hudson" event at the Palisades Interstate Park) was selected by the EBoard as the winner of the Name that Tarpon contest. The contest ran in the last few month's of River Views. Jeanne received a $25 check from the HRFA for her entry of "PIP" the tarpon. That's PIP in the photograph. It was discovered washed ashore by a crew cleaning up the PIP's Shore Trail near Huylers Landing. Gil Hawkins received the photo from Christina Fehre.

A Super Salmon Season Ends Lake Ontario Homesteading for 2021

My favorite fishing month of October has almost passed and as I write this missive to make the November River Views, the good Lord has placed me in what Al White and I long ago code named “heaven”. This refers
to a creek that sometimes runs through neighboring Sackets’s Harbor and as a tributary to Lake Ontario gets a fall run of kings, cohoes, browns and steelhead.
For the few HRFA members who have joined me here already, they know that a well placed Bruger nurple fly or simple egg sack can yield a monster salmon over forty inches and thirty pounds in weight! THE
AVERAGE FISH WILL RUN 15 TO 20 POUNDS IN WEIGHT! All it takes is heavy September/October rains to spur the spawning run that leads to legendary FAST
limit catches. Wayne Geider nailed three fish on three casts a few years back and I dragged home over 60 pounds of Chinooks for the smoker with three fly rod tosses under optimal sight fishing conditions! I had a five day streak of limits! One day I landed eleven kings then slept ten hours! My best king for the year was over forty inches and weighed 27 pounds, a kype jawed male that nailed a nurple fly in the foam of the short falls that are the “dead end” of upstream migration on Mill Creek.
As of this writing I exceeded last year’s haul of 34 kings captured with most released to spawn upstream or end up on another anglers hook. A quick visit by HRFA members Dan Davis and Wayne Geider
resulted in them going home with a cooler full of kings and my old high school track buddy Dan taking his limit on a fly rod on the last day. Other anglers and beginners
are my other priority as always with my rod donation count for 2021 currently at 110 and counting with the vast majority of poles going to local church fund raisers
to get rods in kids hands in the North Country. The most exciting folks I’ve given gear to have been the soldiers and nurses who I’ve met fishing the local streams this
year such as vet, and construction business owner Chazz from Pennsylvania, whose mom, it turned out, Mrs. Cornelius lives a few blocks away from us in Dumont! I
also had the honor of netting his first king.
Another vet, Nick’s wife, a nurse, got her first spinning rod ever from me to start salmon fishing. The couple live right in the homes built next to Mill creek where the salmon are running! Last year a local nurse
from the same buildings got her start with gear I donated and she landed the second king she hooked, a 23 pounder! First

responders up here are truly deserving of
angling time because Covid has ravaged the North Country, filling the few hospitals to capacity and making these folks put in many hours of risk filled overtime. Just
before I left Wayne and Dan Davis at the Bait house creek, I met a family of six with four young boys trying for late season kings. Their bass rods were no match so
the latest donation salmon rod and reel (#110) went to the whole crew to share and have success.
Folks fishing from boats have also reaped a
bountiful harvest of salmonids and my neighbor Fred Lamon took me up to the Perch River cave rocks to catch a couple of spawners. We had a blast as twenty pound kings rocketed under the boat trying to snap our rods but my trusty old Saber Stoker blank held true again and I released the “squirting uncle miltie” so he could
finish his “business”.
The October rains are actually too much as of Halloween with high water murky and tough to fish compared to the easy “sight fishing” earlier in the month. I will be using egg sacks to augment my nurple fly strategy in the hopes of also landing a steelhead or brown that are also in the mix of trophies feeding on the millions of salmon eggs floating in all the estuaries.
When the water is high like this there are five spots that often produce in rushing water. 1) Large boulders and shelf rocks that block flow have “rest areas” behind them for fish to stage and pause. 2) Huge mats of dead or dying weeds and grasses conceal fish especially during sunny midday periods. 3) Undercut banks or rock ledges often hold fish that are not visible but undoubtedly present. 4) The crack and clefts deep in the deepest pools have current sweep right over them and “shelter” the fish from the aggressive current. 5) Waterfalls and rapids
hide fish in the foam where they can aerate better and remain concealed simultaneously.
My new electric smoker that my dear wife, Pat bought me as an early birthday present has been pressed into doing yeoman service and already smoked salmon
orders at my local Methodist church and in our shoreline community have totaled well near $200. I will bring smoked king salmon samples to the November meeting
if you would like to donate to our Youth angler fund @ $12 per pound for king salmon hickory smoked. Try a
sample and get ”hooked”.

What is HRFA Free Money?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.
HRFA Free money (split 50/50) for October 12, 2021 was $143.00 ($123.00 plus, the split 50/50 of $20.00)
From the bucket of HRFA paid members, a name was picked by HRFA member Noah Sardinas at the meeting.
HRFA member Angel Cruz’s name was picked and announced to all present. Angel Cruz was not there, so the $143.00 HRFA free member's money goes back into the jar with the names of all HRFA paid members for the November in person meeting. For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.

HRFA member Dirk VanEverdingen landed this 16" fish in the Hackensack River. We sent the photo off to Tom Lake. Tom ID'ed it as a Gizzard Shad. Tom said he once put a Gizzard Shad in his smoker only to find it unpalatable.

Northwest to Alaska / Southeast to Texas |
|
Pete Musse and son Dalas traveled to Alaska to fish for grayling. They report that the water they waded in was COLD. Note in the photos that they are displaying the impressive dorsal fin that easily identifies the species.
Then off to Texas for some largemouth bass fishing. Not quite so successful there though.

On October 24th, a 200+ Lb. sturgeon was caught on the East End of the Cape Cod Canal, just past Pipes Rip. It was caught by one of HRFA member Sandy Federico's buddies. As one can easily imagine, this was a very unusual event. Sandy sent in the photo. |

The HRFA hosts an annual fishing contest which runs from January through December and is open to all HRFA members. You have 30 days from the day you catch a fish to send in your entries. So, the deadline for submissions is January. As a member of the HRFA you and your immediate family are eligible to enter fish in any of our categories. Various divisions are available for prizes presented at our Annual Awards Dinner in March of the following year. Website updated daily.
