PHILIP AZIZ CENTRE FOR HOSPICE CARE
reaches out to those impacted with HIV/AIDS
_______

from Jennifer Kroezen,
Director of Development

At the onset of COVID-19, we witnessed such a demand for emotional and mental support for people living with HIV that we increased the frequency of our women’s prayer / HIV support group from monthly to weekly via secure video conferencing. Many of our past and present clients reached out to access counselling services. Some of the issues identified were: fear of contracting COVID-19; food insecurity; and isolation (people were not able to access their local ASOs, Casey House drop-in program or other services to deal with their HIV diagnoses). While most HIV agencies in the GTA do not have Christian roots or a mission to support clients seeking a Christian perspective, the Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care continues to be the hospice leader – where HIV community supports and Christian beliefs intersect.

  • Testimonial from the PAC Women’s Spiritual Care Group (weekly Zoom calls during COVID for women with HIV/AIDS): “The weekly prayer meetings by zoom have been a lifeline to me. In all the trauma of COVID-19, I couldn’t sleep from stress. It helped … us coming together. It’s great to have something to hold onto … and to have support in holding onto my faith.”

  • Testimonial from the PAC Women’s Spiritual Care Group: “I can’t be one hundred percent myself at church or in my community because of my HIV. Having this group helps me get back to a focus on God.”
  • Testimonial from a PAC Client with Cancer and HIV/AIDS (comorbidity): “Thank you. I am so appreciative of the Philip Aziz program. They helped me through a rough stretch of COVID-19. We needed a lot of support for a short time….  My husband was ill, and I was recovering from surgery. They provided food for my family, counselling by phone, and connected us to services.”

If you, or a loved one, wishes to contact the Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care, please call (416)363-9196x206 to speak with a Social Worker in the Community Program.
