What's Happening in Youth Services?

Happy Spring!

We’re celebrating longer days and more sunshine with an array of great programs this month!

For our youngest patrons and their families, we’ll hold a four-part Baby Sign Language series on Fridays at 9:30 am, for children ages infant-18 months old. Each week features a different theme, where participants will learn new signs and enjoy a song and story; you can register for any or all of the sessions. This series is part of our “Growing Readers” initiative, generously supported by the Castle Fund of Methuen.

What’s more, we have three special events for young and old alike coming up! One Up Games will be back at the library on the school department’s early-release day (April 12), so kids ages 8 and older can fill that afternoon with fun.

The next day we’ll have “Swifty Saturday,” where participants can celebrate all things Taylor: first we’ll have a family-friendly session, followed by another session for ages 18 and up – come dressed in your favorite Taylor Swift Era, and we’ll have glitter and friendship bracelets to add to your style!

And during April vacation, the dynamic Grooversity percussion ensemble is returning to the library, offering a high-energy survey of Brazilian drumming styles with lots of audience participation – volunteers can even get on stage and help make some music! The program is open to all ages and is funded by The Methuen Cultural Council (a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council).

And speaking of welcome returns, Murphy the Dog is back from his winter vacation and is looking forward to listening to your children (ages 5-18) read aloud to him!

Last but not least, another creative event we’ll be hosting is an art show by students who attend St. Monica School, with their work displayed April 10-19 in the Children’s Room and the YA section.

As ever, we’ll also have our usual variety of preschool programs, storytimes (including a bilingual program), book groups, teen programs, and more – keep an eye on the Youth Services Department calendar and Facebook page to keep track of what’s in store!

Happy April, and Happy Reading
