Title of Talk: TSAT Tag Stripers
Summary: The Fisherman & Gray Fishtag Research have been doing an annual tagging project on big striped bass since 2019 using high-tech MiniPAT technology, thanks to the gracious support of clubs like the HRFA. The Fisherman's Jim Hutchinson, Jr. talks about the project, how it was born, the results yielded from 2021 tagging efforts and what's in store for 2022.

Bio: A Jersey Shore native, Jim Hutchinson, Jr. was hired in 2002 as managing editor of The Fisherman’s New Jersey edition, moving to New York in 2006 to take over as executive editor following the retirement of his mentor, Pete Barrett.
Having covered saltwater fisheries issues extensively, Hutch left The Fisherman in 2009 for a six-year stint as managing director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance, a national political organization dedicated to safeguarding the rights of saltwater anglers and the recreational fishing industry.
He returned to The Fisherman in early 2015 as New Jersey edition managing editor where he hopes to spend the rest of his writing career. A lifelong hunter, angler, and freelance writer, he’s been actively involved in state organizations including New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, the Tuckerton Seaport Museum, and the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Tournament, and also sits on the national advisory board for Gray FishTag Research. When not at his desk, he can often be found on The Road (the name of his small center console he keeps in South Jersey) or surfcasting the beaches near his home in Brick, NJ.

- Let us continue to offer scholarships for worthy college-bound high schoolers.
- Support the restoration of the world's first Riverkeeper vessel so it may take its rightful place in history. Perhaps, in a museum on the Hudson River; the river it protected for decades before its decommissioning.
- Help us realize our dream of having our own museum and meeting place in the Palisades Interstate Park. A beautiful historic place, one that can be shared with the public to enjoy as well.

Greetings HRFA Members and Friends,
I hope that as of this writing, we find you all well and safe and enjoying the fishing opportunities of the pre-COVID-19 Pandemic. I am happy to hear that our members are enjoying the fishing challenges and appreciating the rewards.
The long anticipated HRFA Fred Rung Memorial Striped Bass Derby is now underway, thank you to all participants. Please review below on the current status.
The fishing trip at the Chart House, held on Saturday, 16th April, organized by Miguel Sardinas, was well attended by HRFA members, even though the weather was not favorable.
I would like to thank all that attended the Annual Awards/Fundraising dinner, held on Sunday, 3rd of April. I appreciate their continuous support of our Association. Congratulations to Jeanne Ross the winner of our Friend of the Hudson River award.
Congratulations to the 2021 Fishing contest winners. Congratulations also to Miguel Sardinas for receiving, the well-deserved, prestigious HRFA Pete Barrett award. The event was well attended and entertained by the MC “Mr. Poseidon” as well as the fishing experiences of Noah Sardinas. Thank you to Dan Harrison, the event chairman and all that helped.
The Outdoors/Sportsmen Shows are scheduled for: Garden State, Edison NJ: 10-13 August 2022. We need your help: looking for volunteers and a chair position for these events.
At the upcoming HRFA board meeting are reviewing our plans and strategies for this year. As always, we appreciated your suggestions and for meeting topics and fishing events.
We are initiating Fishing Clinics as part of the Youth Angles Program and are held in conjunction with the respective events. Please look for the scheduling for when you can participate.
The General meetings are being held, at the Elks Lodge. I would like to express our thanks to the presenter, Tracy Brown, who became President and Hudson Riverkeeper in 2021. She presented details of the goals, challenges, and accomplishments of the organization.
The HRFA traditional Hooked on the Hudson event will take place after 2-year delay, on 30 th of April. The chairman Peter Musse and the volunteers are working hard in preparation for the event
After a long delays and postponements, we were able to participate in the Saltwater expo in Edison New Jersey. We as well as the public finally met in a long anticipated friendly event. I would like to thank the volunteers that helped to make this show a success. David Mercer and Janet Soto, our VP, Joe Albanese, Arnie Ulrich, Marvin Oresky, Miguel Sardinas, Scott Havner and, Dirk van Everdingen who also encouraged show attendees to participate in the custom-made outdoors grill raffle.
We are receiving invitations to participate in Youth Fishing Programs of our Friends/organizations. As the schedules are confirmed, we will be reaching out for volunteers. Look for schedule in the newsletter.
As the restrictions of COVID-19 pandemic are fading out, our organization continues to function successfully, and our activities are increasing are thanks to our dedicated members. I would like to take this opportunity the express my sincere appreciation. Also, I would like to remind those members, especially the recipients of the HRFA prestigious “Pete Barrett” award, that is expect from them to continue their efforts and contribution, to the best of their abilities. We are charitable organization, we provide our services to many, and we expect our members to participate and support us, accordingly.

The Fred Rung Memorial Catch, Tag & Release Striped Bass Derby

The HRFA’s annual ‘Catch & Release’ and ‘Catch, Tag & then Release’ Striper Derby continues until May 15th. Here are the early returns.

For over 20 years, Fred Rung was a very dedicated HRFA member. He served as HRFA Vice President with Gil Hawkins (President 2014-16) and a Director. He was an educator and his experience and skills helped pioneer the HRFA website together with his mentor Charles Stamm (President 1996-98).
For his dedication and valuable contributions, he received the highest HRFA honor, the Pete Barrett Award, in 2013.
Fred Rung passed away in March 2020. We still miss his friendship, dedication and wisdom,

Join Emily McGuckin, Littoral Society Fish Tagging Director, for a day of surf fishing and instruction on the beach. She'll cover the basics of casting, knot tying, lure/bait selection, and “reading” a beach.
All skill levels are welcomed. Rods, reels and tackle will be provided, but bring your own if you have it. Children under 18 are welcome with a supervising adult. Meet at 8 a.m. at building 18. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided for the early morning gathering but please bring your lunch.

Chart House Fishing Trip
April 16th

The Chart House fishing trip was set for April 16, and that was also the start of the 2022 Fred Rung Memorial Striper Derby. With both events coinciding with each other, we decided to have a Striper Derby Kickoff Event.
HRFA members showed up excited and enthusiastic as the Striper Derby has become one of the most popular spring fishing events. And for good reasons, not only are the prizes amazing, but the derby helps The
American Littoral Society by providing scientific data by tagging stripers.

As always, Pete Musse did a great job on the grilling out the back of his JEEP. The hot
dogs were delicious.
We did have a separate fishing contest on the pier with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for largest Striped Bass in length.
First place went to Noah Sardinas with a last-minute catch, literary with only a minute
left before the 12 o'clock deadline, Noah reels in striped bass that beats leading fish by one inch. (Talk about luck!) Second place goes to Conor Harrsion. Third Place went to Ryan Sullivan.
Thanks to all who came out to support the event and tight lines.

Earth Day Fest

The HRFA was happy to accept the invitation extended to us by student Jade Tollis, who started the Bergen Community College Outdoors group, to participate in their Earth Day Fest. Also at the on-campus event in Paramus were the Hackensack Riverkeeper and other like-minded organizations. Our table drew visitors interested in learning about us, our mission and fishing. We may have won over some new members as well. |

Hooked on the Hudson

Pete Musse & Skip Wisniewski pulled it all together at Ross Dock with a lot of help from their friends. Namely, all the volunteers who showed up early, worked throughout the event and/or stayed late to clean up.
We had great weather. We had a fishing contest with some catfish caught and prizes awarded. Eat bacon & egg sandwiches with coffee for breakfast and hot dogs, burgers and drinks for lunch.

Not Bad For My First Cast

I’ve recently read several fishing articles that compared the fighting abilities of striped bass to those of large fresh water carp. The bottom feeding brutes over
twenty pounds have verified the assertions.
Since I live most of the time on Lake Ontario now, these brawlers have to be my substitutes for the Linesiders left to HRFA readers in the Hudson and Atlantic area.
Friday, April 22nd, was the first day at our Lake Ontario home that I finally had time to drown a worm. Truthfully my target species was perch with the outside option of bullheads or channel cats cruising off our
Black River Bay wall. 50 mph winds and heavy rain and sleet plus two days of spring cleaning to open our house had left me anxious and impatient to see what was
biting.
Did I ever connect fast!
One heave of my night crawler loaded rod landed the offering a solid distance from my shoreline base at the top of my wall. Nothing hit for a while as I raked leaves and observed the pole nestled in the deeply imbedded metal spike rod holder Timmy Burden had gifted me years ago.
Thank God the holder was well anchored because when the first bite came the fish ran like the Amtrak Acela express all the
way down Black River Bay towards Lake Ontario! She seemed to be a non-stop as my 20lb. test Power Pro was singing off my reel so fast that I feared getting spooled.
After a moment where I saw the bare metal and a couple turns left on the reel spool, I finally turned the fish. It was still stop and go with a perfect drag setting wearing out

the surging fish. Careful pumping and
retrieve worked the behemoth back to my waiting salmon net.
I finally got a gander at my adversary, a
hippo-fat spring carp gravid with so many eggs she resembled a pregnant rugby ball!My small circle hook was in the gummy corner lip and popped right out when I gripped it with my pliers. My wife, Pat took two quick cell phone photos, (check out the accompanying evidence), after which I measured and weighed the
Hoover-mouth. She tipped the scales at 24½ pounds and reached a length of 34½ inches.
Despite a 15-20 minute tug of war and a few more moments out of the water for the above delays, this big momma was released and swam off like I had merely created a rude delay to her spring spawning ritual.
What a thrill! You never know what will bite next in the early spring mayhem! It might be a churning channel cat over
twenty pounds, a pugnacious pike in double figure poundage, shocking sheep heads in the same weight class, wonderful tasty walleye or simply plenty of pan fish to fill the frying pan many times over.
In the next few days of angling that’s exactly what further fishing produced. My HRFA readers and friends can understand
why we live the “nicer half” of the weather year in Dexter, New York.
DUNKING BAIT OFF DRONES?
A Hawaiian fishing technique is quickly in
position to be outlawed by its state legislature as anglers have come up with an advanced fishing technique that lands huge fish normally out of reach from shoreline
casters. It entails remote controlled drones carrying bait offerings far offshore, normally unreachable by even the finest surf casters. Fish can not only be spotted and identified but pursued by the drone to present the bait right over them. A hooked fish may even then be filmed from above while the rod holder hauls in his catch.
This could spread to every state where distance casting off shore is needed and further distance can be achieved with drone applications. As usual the wealthy few have the big bucks to invest in this newest type of “fish catching”, not sport fishing.

The April 15th deadline for public comment on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Striped Bass Draft Amendment 7 has passed. However, there is still a petition circulating trying get the commission to reach a decision favorable to the recreational angler and the sustainability of the biomass. Speak now or forever hold . . . you know, the thing. The HRFA took a stand to support a decision that would maintain the Status Quo. |

What is HRFA Free Money? Are you a paid member.?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.
HRFA Free money (split 50/50) for April 12th meeting was $36.00. From the bucket of HRFA paid members, a name was picked at the meeting by the guest speaker.
HRFA member Andrew Zimmerman’s name was picked and announced to all present three times. Andrew Zimmerman was not there, so the HRFA free money goes back into the bucket.
Will you be there at the May HRFA meeting to collect the HRFA free money?

Pay your dues. Get your 2022 membership card.
The generous grace period ended for renewals on March 31st. Those not renewed are on the stale list and are removed from the membership rolls. Note , If you do not have a 2022 or life time membership card , you are not a HRFA member.
For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period (3 months) for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.

From Fish to Dish

Raw - The hardest part is opening them. It's easy to make your own cocktail sauce with ketchup, horseradish and Tabasco to taste. Serve with lemon squeeze too if desired.

Steamed - Put raw clams in colander hung over a pot of water. Bring water to boil. (Discard any clams which do not open. They are not safe to eat.) Mix olive oil, white wine, lemon juice, Italian seasoning, chopped onions and shallot. Simmer in saucepan. Put opened clams in serving dish, pour the sauce on top and enjoy.

Stuffed (aka Clams Oreganato)- Steam clams open, let them cool and remove them from the shell. Chop them into fine pieces. Blend them into a combination of bread crumbs, olive oil, chopped onion, diced red/green bell peppers, sticks of butter, red wine and lemon to make a thick paste. Stuff into the clam shells. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and paprika. Bake for 15 mins.
