First Sunday After Pentecost:
Trinity Sunday
John 3:1-17

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

“Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

GRACE CLERGY TRANSITION

We look forward to welcoming the Rev. Tina Rathbone on August 1. Please pray for her and for our community as we move through this transition.
Collect of Gratitude for Ministry

O God, our heavenly Father, you raise up faithful servants to be pastors in your Church and to feed your flock. We give thanks for The Rev. Christina Rathbone, who has accepted the call to be rector of Grace Church and to serve the communities around us. Give abundantly to Tina and to all pastors the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may minister as true servants of Christ and stewards of your divine mysteries; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

A MESSAGE FROM LIBBY
In-Person Worship This Sunday This is the week!

Our first in-person INDOOR service will be at Crissy Farm at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 30. For the last two weeks, I’ve said the service would be outdoors, but a decision has been made to move indoors. Reservations are not required. We expect people to wear masks inside, unless under age 5 or prevented by a medical or disabling condition. We’ll practice social distancing, and we’ll open windows, as possible. In the celebration of Holy Eucharist, only the bread will be shared (as Bishop Fisher has instructed). After the service, feel free to visit with each other outdoors with or without a mask, without judging the choices each of us makes in that setting.

As we begin to gather in-person, our approach to relaxing safety standards will be gradual and cautious. Plans for May 30 are being made with attention to the MA Safety Standards for Places of Worship and Religious Services as revised on May 17, 2021. We want to be broadly inclusive. Continuing to wear masks for a while longer enables us to show our love of neighbor.

Some of the new livestreaming equipment authorized by the vestry is on backorder. We won’t have it for May 30, but hopefully will have it set up and ready to go sometime in June or early July. If you know someone interested in training as one of a rotating team of Sunday morning “tech” people, please tell our Junior Warden Rick Gore. Until the equipment is installed and people trained to run it, we’ll offer the service using Zoom for those who cannot be physically present with us at Crissy Farm. What a joy it will be to worship together in person safely while also including those who live far away or are home-bound!

In June, seven people from Grace will participate in a masterclass from Virginia Seminary on “Being a Top-Notch Hybrid Church.” Alternating Sundays in June between In-Person Hybrid and only Zoom worship services will give us time to try
new tech solutions and learn what works best in our context. Stay tuned!

All In-Person Worship Services are at Crissy Farm

Grace Church Festival of Hymns
Sunday, June 20 at 10 AM on Zoom

Thanks to all who submitted favorite hymns. We received more suggestions than we can use on June 20, but hope to use all your favorites in the near future. Now that the deadline for submissions has passed, your Music Director and Interim Rector will begin to weave together hymns, prayer, and scripture into what promises to be a delightful and inspiring morning worship service on June 20. Since the service will be on Zoom rather than in-person, you can sing along to your heart’s content in your loudest voice! In the words of one of our hymns (Hymnal 1982, no. 420):
When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried, Alleluia! Alleluia! Let every instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always. Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen.

This online retreat is co-sponsored by The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts. Open to all at no cost.

Jesus calls us to fullness of life (John 10:10), yet many of us feel anything but fully alive – we may feel melancholy, distracted, anxious, or numb. In this morning retreat we will explore ways of prayer that make us available to the healing and enlivening power of the Spirit. The first part of the retreat will focus on our inner lives; the second part will focus on how our outer lives can create the conditions for experiencing what Joseph Campbell called “the rapture of being alive.” Our time together will include presentations and guided meditation, with options for solitary reflection and small group conversation. If possible, please bring a candle, Bible, and Book of Common Prayer.
The Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas serves as Missioner for Creation Care in the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts and Southern New England Conference, United Church of Christ. Her latest book (co-edited) is Rooted and Rising: Voices of Courage in a Time of Climate Crisis. Her collection of daily meditations for Advent and Christmas, Joy of Heaven, to Earth Come Down, calls us to a practice of prayer grounded in reverence for the earth and to intentional living in harmony with the natural world. Her Website: RevivingCreation.org.

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.

GIDEON'S GARDEN
Welcome Back Matt
Matt Bilotta, Gideon’s Garden Youth Supervisor, has returned from his first semester at college. He writes: “I’m back from California! I absolutely loved my time there, and can’t wait for next semester to begin. The classes were incredibly insightful and covered a variety of Biblical topics, and the experiences there were unforgettable. It would be an understatement to say that it was a fun time. That said, I’m also very excited to be back. I missed home, and have already had the opportunity to be helpful around the garden and farm. A lot of big projects have already been completed, and I’m eager to see how the work continues to progress.”

Take One Day this Summer
Bring Four Volunteers to Sheffield
Sit 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Begun in 2018 as a shared ministry of two Sheffield churches, First Congregational Church, UCC and Christ Trinity Church (Episcopal and Lutheran), ‘Trail Magic” is back and we’re inviting you to share it with us.

We have all the supplies, we’ll guide the set up and clean up, we’ll even bring most of the day’s food. You simply pick a day, bring four people and a $50 Big Y gift card, sit in the shade, and create a corner of kindness in the world. It’s the easiest, most rewarding, least expensive, most volunteer inclusive mini-mission trip you’ll ever do!

Our 2021 Appalachian Trail Ministry will run from June 21 – August 14. Guest Mission Days will occur on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the season.

For more information, or to register for a 2021 one-day Mini-Mission Trip please contact Rev. Jill Graham at [email protected]
BERKSHIRE BOUNTY MOBILE FOOD DRIVE
TUESDAY, JUNE 1st

Berkshire Bounty, the non-profit food rescue operation that provides fresh produce and other food to pantries, is holding its eighth monthly Mobile Food Drive on Tuesday, June 1st. We will collect canned and/or packaged goods (no perishables, please) that will be delivered to People’s Pantry in Great Barrington or the South Congregational Church in Pittsfield. There are still many families in our community who continue to face food insecurity. Data has suggested that it will get worse before it gets better. We continue to need the support of our community to help those in need! Foods in most demand are canned and/packaged food such as hearty soups, tomato pasta sauce and boxes of cereal. If donating from your pantry, please check expiration dates.

If you would like to donate food in this worthwhile effort please email Berkshire Bounty at [email protected], and include your name, address, and phone number. We will respond to your email, with instructions to place your donation outside your door before 9:00 am on June 1st. A Berkshire Bounty volunteer will come by to pick up your donation on that morning, and will call you if there is any issue. You can reach us at 917-273-7039.

Thank you in advance for your generosity during this difficult time.

Jay Weintraub & Mark Lefenfeld Co-Presidents, Berkshire Bounty
Welcome to the Bloomin' 4 Good Program!
A Brand New Program to Benefit Lee Food Pantry
Let's Fight Hunger Together. One Bouquet at a Time.
We are thrilled to announce the Bloomin' 4 Good Program, a brand new program from Stop & Shop that works to fight hunger in our local communities. In this program, every $9.99 Bloomin' 4 Good Bouquet sold sends a $1 donation to a hunger organization local to the store in which it was purchased.

For the month of June 2021, Lee Food Pantry has been selected to receive a $1 donation for every $9.99 Bloomin' 4 Good Bouquet with the red circle sticker (pictured on the left) sold at the store located at 1 Dan Fox Drive, Pittsfield MA.
SHINE YOUR LIGHT

In this unpredictable time, your church continues to give thanks for and need your support. If you are capable of sending in your pledge, thank you. If you are unable to give at this time, we understand. If you are capable of giving a bit more so we can respond to the needs of our community, we are very grateful. If you are in need, please contact a member of the Vestry listed at the top of the newsletter. Since we are not gathering in person in community, we ask that you send your gifts via mail to Grace Church, P.O. Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230. We are truly all in this life together. We pray, trusting that God will see us through this season and beyond.

Thank you for giving generously to support the ministry of Grace.

CHANGE THE BABIES
It costs about $1500 a year to support a baby. The Diocese's goal is for one congregation
to support one child for a year.
To donate to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana please send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

LEARNING AND DISCOVERY
Becoming Beloved Community
"Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863." ©JUNETEENTH.com

Join us as we celebrate the day when freedom finally reached the last enslaved persons in America. All people of faith might mark this particular moment in our history mindful that the sin of white supremacy continues to impact Black lives in our time. This diocesan liturgy is being planned by the Beloved Community Commission as an entry point for deeper engagement with the story and to gather us all for prayer on this great day. Our presider will be the Rt. Rev. Douglas J. Fisher.

Education for Ministry Reflection

This week the South Berkshire EfM group discussed the Old Testament prophets Amos and Hosea, as well as Paul, in the context of the two New Testament letters to the Corinthians. Our conversation led us to a theological reflection on 1 Corinthians 13:12: For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. We wrote this Collect: Reconciling God, who sees us fully as we are, we confess that we can’t stop looking in the mirror, though we deny our vanity. Forgive us for our self-regard. We place our hope in having clear vision, true discernment. By your Holy Spirit, may we learn to see and love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

Announcement from the Archivist
of the Eastern Diocese
Welcome Parish Historians, Archivists and all those interested in our History

Lynn Smith, Diocesan Archivist for the Diocese of Massachusetts, extends an invitation to all who are interested in history to join the Parish Historians Group.

Pre-Covid, this group has hosted Annual Meetings that have included tours of historically significant sites in the Greater Boston area. When it is safe to do so, these tours will resume.

In the meantime, please join with others who have similar interests by contacting [email protected]. Remember, we are better together, and preserving history is not just about the past--but asking the question How can we be better than we were?

It's Earth Day. Take Action.
On March 23, 2021, the bishops of the Episcopal dioceses of Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts declared a climate emergency. From their declaration:

“We believe that God is calling us all to embrace brave and difficult change. Everything we do as faithful individuals and as a church must reckon with the unprecedented emergency in which humanity now finds itself.

“We strongly urge congregations across Massachusetts to pray, learn, act, and advocate as we build a bold and faith-filled response to the greatest moral challenge of our time.”

In May, the Creation Care Justice Network of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and the Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas will host four webinars on the climate emergency and how to respond to it: Pray, Learn, Act and Advocate.
These will be held on Wednesdays, May 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 7 p.m.

Bible Study
Tuesday Bible Study
The Tuesday Bible Study is now on break, but hopes to reconvene in September.

Our current Tuesday Bible Study series ended last week by reading aloud all five chapters of the First Letter of John, an epistle that emphasizes recognizing Jesus as the embodiment of God’s love. We reflected on the themes of this short letter from the viewpoint of both the author and the recipients. After a lively discussion, we ended with a litany focusing on this key concept: “Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.”

Collaborating with St. Paul’s, Christ Trinity, and Hevreh to share several short Bible Study series over the past year has been rewarding. Meeting via Zoom enabled us to overcome geographical hurdles, and we’ve been enriched by a variety of approaches to the study of scripture as leadership has rotated among local clergy. With summer arriving and Grace’s new rector beginning in August, this series on John’s Letters was our last for a while.
