THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

John 21:1-19

"Why Ask Three Times?"

From the Pastor

Last Sunday in worship we re-visited the story of Thomas. "Doubting Thomas" we like to call him, fixed as we are on his apparent skepticism. But God's word reminded us that Jesus' other disciples -- and we -- are not so different from Thomas. We too seek assurances, if not concrete proof, that the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is real.

Kathleen Norris, in "Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith" writes "For a long time, even though I was attracted to church, I was convinced that I did not belong there, because my beliefs were not thoroughly solid, set in stone. When I first stumbled upon the Benedictine Abbey...I was surprsied to find the monks so unconcerned with my weighty doubts and intellectual frustrations over Christianity. What interested them more was my desire to come to their worship...I was a bit disapointed--I had thought that my doubts were spectacular obstacles to my faith and was confused but intrigued when an old monk blithely stated that doubt is merely the seed of faith, a sign that faith is alive and ready to grow...They seemed to believe that if I just kept coming back to worship, kept coming home, things would eventually fall into place."

Perhaps it is best for us to make peace with our doubts and see them as "seeds of faith" and opportunities for growth. The risen Christ will be our companion on our walk through this season of Eastertide. He is patient. He meets us where we are and encourages us to step out in faith, to step out in belief even when we don't have all the evidence we want. As gospel writer John says, Jesus wants us to have "life in his name."

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mitch

RRCC Welcomes New Member Ed Swain

Meet Ed Swain, Round Rock Christian Church's newest member. Ed began worshiping with us in February, then came forward on Sunday, March 13th to place his membership at RRCC. He joins us by transfer of membership from Pilgrim Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas, where he confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized.

Born an "army brat" in Japan, Ed spent a few early years in San Angelo but grew up mainly in Houston. He is currently the maintenance director at the Round Rock apartment complex where he lives.

One of Ed's hobbies is knitting and crocheting, and he has already gotten involved with our congregation's Handcrafter Ministry. We all look forward to getting to know Ed better and to serving God with him. Welcome, Ed!

As a member of RRCC, I’d like to thank Pastor Mitch for the meaningful services during the Easter season! After the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services one can truly feel the joy and excitement that we serve a risen Savior! The choir added so much to each service. Thank you, Randy and choir. Praise band always lifts us up. Thank you. Thank you to all who worked behind the scenes!

It was as I heard said, a "well orchestrated season."

Explorers Sunday School Class Announcement

Attention all! The Explorers Sunday School class has returned to RRCC! We resumed our in-person classes on April 24. Thanks to the Property Committee for getting us ready to study the Bible in person. We would love to have others join us as we are now studying 1 Corinthians. We enjoy lots of discussion as we work to understand and apply our learning to our daily lives. As we know, the Bible is amazing in that so much seems it could have been written in 2022. Come talk with us.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

Good morning,

As you got up I watched and hoped you would talk to me. Just a few words, such as thanking me for something good in your life yesterday or last week would do.

But I noticed you were busy selecting the right clothes for work. I waited again to hear from you. When you ran around the house collecting papers, I knew there would be a few minutes to stop and say hello, but you never slowed down.

I wanted to tell you that I could help you accomplish more than you ever dreamed possible if you would just spend some of each day with me. At one point, you waited fifteen minutes in a chair with nothing to do. I waited to hear from you.

Then I saw you spring to your feet; I thought you wanted to talk to me, but you ran to the phone and called a friend. I watched as off to work you went and waited patiently all day long to hear from you. With all your activities you were too busy to talk with me.

I noticed at lunch you looked around; maybe you just felt embarrassed to talk to me. You glanced three tables over and noticed some of your friends talking to me before they ate, but you wouldn't.

There was still more time left, and I hoped that we would talk. You went home and had many things to do. After they were done, you turned on the TV; just about anything goes there and you spend many hours watching. I waited as you continued watching TV and ate your meal but again you wouldn't talk to me.

At bedtime you were totally tired. After you said good night to your family you plopped into bed and fell asleep. I had so much wanted to be part of your day. We could have had so much fun and accomplished so much together.

I love you so much that I wait every day for a thought, prayer or thanks. Well, maybe tomorrow! I'll be waiting.

Your Friend,

God
