South Dakota Parent Connection, as part of the State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG), is offering a unique train the trainer opportunity professionals can use to help parents understanding how reading skills develop, how reading is taught in school, and how they can work on reading skills with their children at home.
The training is based on a parent education series called Read to Succeed that has been offered to schools working within the SPDG grant. This training is now being offered to all schools through-out the state. The training includes PowerPoints and activities focused on the big five areas of literacy
(Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension).
The first module addresses foundational skills of reading – phonemic awareness and phonics. The second module addresses fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
Participants will leave with digital and print materials needed to deliver the training modules to families in their districts. Participants who complete the training can receive a CEU certificate for 4 contact hours.
